The School of Dentistry has an unparalleled reputation among dental schools in its efforts in DEI. The school has worked intentionally to develop a culture of inclusion for all students, staff and faculty. In 2019 the School was awarded the GIES Award by the American Dental Education Association for its efforts in DEI. We are now looking to hire a DEI/Wellness Program Officer to assist our growth in Belonging. The DEI / Wellness Program Officer reports directly to the Associate Dean for DEI, leading the DEI strategic initiatives and programs for the School of Dentistry in conjunction with the University's DEI strategic Plan 2.0. In order to amplify our impact on students, faculty and staff, this role will provide consultative and functional expertise across the School. The DEI / Wellness Program Officer is responsible for implementing and evaluating initiatives that primarily enhance DEI for students, faculty, and staff. This position aligns well with DEI 2.0 Strategic Objectives found in the School of Dentistry Plan and the UM Central Campus DEI Goals and Initiatives. What You'll Do

Duties include and may not be limited to the following:

Student, Staff, Faculty Wellness and Belonging
  • Develop a Belonging and Well-Being Office that would focus on wellness for our School of Dentistry students, staff, and faculty
  • Coordinate and partner on Wellness and Belonging activities for the School of Dentistry with our Associate Dean of DEI, DEI-MAC committee, embedded Counselor (CAPS), School Social worker, HR, faculty affairs and team leading the Mental Health First Aid initiative
  • Coordinate with our Climate Study Steering Committee to build annual measures of assessing belongingness and well-being among our students, staff, and faculty
  • Partner with our Marketing and Communications department to advance wellness and DEI strategic awareness and goals, events and opportunities
  • Work closely with SoD and SoDHR staff to enhance inclusiveness within academic departments/units through programming, training, coaching, professional development, and collaboration with faculty, students, and other stakeholders
  • Identify and coordinate staff DEI advocates among SoD departments
  • Support and recognize SoD students, faculty, and staff for DEI-related contributions
  • Lead our DEI MAC student liaison group

DEI Strategic Planning
  • Support Associate Dean of DEI in the development, implementation and on-going sustainability of DEI strategic goals
  • Provide leadership and coordination to foster the integration of staff DEI strategic goals with related groups and stakeholders (e.g. faculty, students, etc.)
  • Partner with the DEI team to produce annual reports for the DEI 2.0 Strategic Plan including evaluating programs and and updating programs.
  • Use innovative approaches and researched-based methodologies in all aspects of your work
  • Scope and develop new projects to support the School's DEI mission and portfolio
  • Work with the DEI-MAC leads and school committees to build additional infrastructure to support our initiatives and measure our impact
  • Present to and facilitate meeting/sessions with faculty, staff and students on issues related to DEI and wellness and mental health
  • Represent the School of Dentistry and the Associate Dean for DEI to other School and University offices and to outside agencies

Programming
  • Work closely with the DEI-MAC to include wellness goals into existing events, training opportunities, and programs
  • This role would also support the office of DEI programming including DEI-MAC and DEI-MAC Implementation, annual DEI reporting both internal and external, and special programming
  • Collaborate with staff operational areas to develop, implement, and evaluate DEI-related training, coaching, orientation, and professional development opportunities for SoD staff, faculty and students
  • Research topics related to curriculum, community engagement and service, faculty, staff, and student affairs and other matters relevant to the School of Dentistry
  • Support staff, faculty and student hiring/recruitment/orientation activities and practices that advance DEI goals including and introduction to DEI and Wellness during monthly orientation


Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor's degree with 3 or more years of professional experience supporting organizational change through DEI efforts
  • Demonstrated experience in providing guidance, support, and resources that advance equity and inclusion and belonging
  • Ability to effectively network and build relationships with compassion, empathy, and trustworthiness
  • Successful past experience in DEI, human resources management, or other relevant professional work
  • Prior successful strategic planning and implementation experience 2+ years using project management and change management best practices with a focus on managing a variety of stakeholders
  • Experience creating and delivering DEI-related communications to a variety of audiences, including faculty, staff, and students Interest in working with teams to translate strategic goals to measurable outcomes
  • Demonstrated experience in training, workshop development, and facilitation with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion excellence
  • Knowledge of current DEI issues in higher education
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office or similar office productivity suite and intermediate ability to compile, analyze and report statistical data

  • Advanced degree preferred. Knowledge of current DEI issues in higher education.
  • Experience leading teams.
  • Demonstrated experience, passion, and commitment for addressing diversity, inclusion, justice, and equity issues and ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse communities (e.g., racial, gender identity and expression, disability, LGBTQIA+)
