Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services' (DBHDS) Office of Integrated Health Support Network is seeking two (2) highly organized, motivated, skilled, and experienced dental hygienists to join our team and serve as Dental Hygienists for individuals with developmental disabilities (DD). This position works with an interdisciplinary team and licensed clinical staff to assist with clinical treatment within the scope of practice, as well as serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team to provide comprehensive patient care and services in a variety of community settings throughout the Commonwealth. The ideal candidate will have a passion for patient care and a commitment to promoting best practices and providing high-quality dental services. Primary duties include conducting dental cleanings, taking X-rays, and educating patients on proper oral hygiene. Selected candidate must have completed or be willing to complete a continuing education course designed to develop the competencies needed to provide care under remote supervision offered by an accredited dental education program or from a continuing education provider.

Additional responsibilities include:
• Performing periodontal charting, assessments, and screenings for oral cancer.
• Assessing and managing patient pain and anxiety.
• Administering fluoride treatments, sealants, local anesthesia, and nitrous oxide.
• Providing oral health education such as providing training programs and general presentations regarding the dental program across the Commonwealth.
• Assisting the dentist in patient care and treatment planning, and with procedures such as fillings, extractions, and root canals.
• Assisting with the ordering and maintenance of dental supplies and equipment.
• Communicating effectively with patients to address any concerns or questions.
• Adhering to all HIPAA regulations and maintain patient confidentiality.
• Maintaining accurate patient records and update medical histories as necessary.
• Ensuring compliance with all safety and infection control protocols.
• Participating in continuing education courses to maintain licensure and improve skills.
• Contributing to a positive and supportive work environment.
• Providing advocacy in the areas of oral health and preventive healthcare.

Minimum Qualifications

• Current state dental hygiene license.
• Clinical experience consisting of at least 2,500 hours.
• Demonstrated competencies in the fundamental knowledge and skills of a Dental Hygienist.
• Basic knowledge of Developmental Disabilities and leadership principles and practices.
• Experience performing dental hygiene treatment.
• Ability to work within scope of practice and the allowable activities of a Dental Hygienist without onsite supervision.
• The ability and flexibility to organize and plan the management of multiple priorities.
• Must have the ability to travel to work locations, as planned, throughout the Commonwealth, including overnight travel.
• Experience with periodontal therapy and treatment planning.
• Proficiency in digital radiography and intraoral imaging.
• Ability to educate patients on oral hygiene and disease prevention.
• Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
• Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.
• A valid, unrestricted driver's license to drive mobile dental units, as needed.

Additional Considerations

• Certifications: CPR/BLS, Basic First Aid, ACLS, and X-Ray or the willingness to obtain all listed certifications.
