Job Description

PURPOSE OF POSITION

Performs basic dental care tasks, focused on keeping patients' teeth and gums clean and achieving optimal oral health in patients. Responsible for the direct provision of oral hygiene and appropriate preventive services to dental patients of the center. The Registered Dental Hygienist will also be responsible for providing appropriate oral health information to individuals and groups.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:
1. Assists in the oral health management of all clinic patients.
2. Obtains baseline oral hygiene assessment data based upon accepted principles of oral hygiene and periodontal care.
3. Records patient-hygienist transactions as they occur in the patient's dental record so that the dental record accurately and completely reflects the nature of the contact, the condition of the patient and the care or treatment provided.
4. Document, maintain and update patient periodontal charting records for patients with chronic, acute, general or localized moderate to severe periodontitis.
5. Provides oral health education and appropriate individual counseling for all center dental patients.
6. Provides clinical oral hygiene services including dental prophylaxis, scaling, sealant application and fluoride application consistent with accepted professional practices and standards and in compliance with applicable state law and the center's clinical protocols.
7. Requisitions supplies: Maintenance of cabinets and counters, supplying necessary dental supplies in operative room, reporting repairs.
7. Assists dentist in the event of unanticipated shortage of dental assistants.
8. Reprocessing of Instruments: Replace all dental plastic covers, enzyme solutions and spraying solution on chairs and counters, distribute sterilized instruments, reprocess expired instruments to ensure sterility, log in dental instruments and hand pieces.
9. Maintaining Dental Units: Oil hand pieces and suctioning Units.

10 Entering in patients record "No Show" and preparing recall calls.
11. Performs related work as required translation
12. Integration of appropriate patient dental hygiene care with other health care professionals involved in the patient's health care management.
13. Organizes and performs preventive oral health presentations at on-site and off-site locations.
14. Assists in the provision of technical assistance and health education in the community as requested.
15. Participates in the PI program of the Dental Department of the center.
16. Performs independent procedures as delegated and directed by a dentist in accordance with state regulations and law as well as Dental Department protocol and directive.
17. Assists in the maintenance of all Dental Department areas in compliance with Dental Department directive and policies as well as center policies and procedures relative to infection control, exposure control and safety issues.
18. Receives and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinic business and patient care of the Dental Department.
19. Assists with various clinical and administrative functions of the center as appropriate and time permits.
20. Insures the proper disposal of all contaminated or potentially contaminated materials in accordance with Dental Department directive and center policy as well as state federal regulations(s).
21. Complies in full with the center's Exposure Control Plan.
22. As directed by a supervisor, performs other related and/or necessary tasks to achieve organizational and programmatic goals and objectives.
23. Responsible for personal compliance with all applicable federal, state, local and center rules, regulations, protocols and procedures governing the practice of dental hygiene and the clinical provision of dental hygiene services as well as those relating to, but not limited to, personnel issues, work place safety, public health and confidentiality.

Minimum Qualifications
1. A valid license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist, issued by the New York State Department of
Education.
For Appointment to Assignment Level II:
1. In addition to meeting the qualification requirement for Assignment Level I described above, must
have one year of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist.

CERTIFICATION(S)/LICENSE(S):

New York State licensure as a Dental Hygienist required.

Current CPR (BLS) certification

Language Skills:

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word), as well as Practice Management and Electronic Medical Record software - eClinicalWorks a plus). Other Skills and Abilities Ability to work as part of a health care team; ability to embrace role in the customer service equation; ability to multitask to also handle some of the functions of the Dental Assistant during absence/peak patient flow periods.

COMPUTER PROGRAMS/SOFTWARE OPERATED

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have basic to intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Outlook, Excel, Word), as well as Practice Management and Electronic Medical Record software including Dexis, EPIC, Wisdom (Dental software of EPIC) and Dentrix.

9. Prolonged sitting or standing may be required. Those physical movements and the degree of mobility, manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination normally associated with the practice of modern oral hygiene will be performed on a repetitive basis.
10. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, radiation and other conditions common to a clinical environment may routinely be encountered
