Under the direction of the President and CEO, the CMO has overall responsibility for and authority to advise medical policies, medical management programs, and all aspects of clinical services to Mass General Brigham Health Plan members, consistent with Mass General Brigham Health Plan strategic goals, objectives, and budget. The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) is responsible for development, communication, and implementation of the medical strategy, policies and programs and the oversight of key corporate initiatives. The CMO provides medical leadership across the organization to ensure the best possible quality of care for Mass General Brigham Health Plan members and supports the President and CEO and Board of Directors as a key member of the senior leadership team in developing and implementing the strategic direction of Mass General Brigham Health Plan.

Responsibilities:

• Plan, coordinate, and communicate all the medical strategies, standards for care, and policies of the organization and develop policies and procedures relative to practices.

• Provide executive leadership for the corporate strategy planning process and the management and efficient implementation of key corporate projects related to clinical programs.

• Represent Mass General Brigham Health Plan as its medical leader with all external government, provider, advocacy, trade association and medical constituencies. Work to position Mass General Brigham Health Plan as a recognized national leader in the provision of comprehensive care to the Commercial Population, Medicaid, and other target populations.

• Provide medical leadership across Mass General Brigham Health Plan to ensure that medical practices reflect a dedication to high quality patient care.

• Develop leadership and functional abilities of all clinical staff through the recruitment, coaching, mentoring, developing, and handling the performance of direct reports.

• Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs/strategies and regulatory action.

• Evaluate and advise on new technologies and treatments related to health care and medical practices.

• Provide strategic, medical, and clinical input and leadership on decisions affecting the organization, such as evaluation of potential alliances, business challenges, select contracts, etc.

• Establish and optimize relationships with appropriate government entities and the medical community.

• Ensure that all organizational activities and business operations within span of control are carried out in compliance with all local, state, and federal government and accreditation and other agency regulations.

• Inform, engage, inspire, empower, and actively listen to employees.

• Make decisions that put the needs of the people we serve-our members, providers, brokers, and employers-front and center.

• Communicate and cascade information to employees in a timely manner and actively participate in the success of cross-organizational programs and initiatives.

• Identify/build processes and align resources to accomplish key objectives; clearly convey and assign clear accountability for important objectives, deadlines, and expectations.

• Hire, participate in, and/or recommend development measures and disciplinary actions up to and including termination; evaluate performance and supervise the work of all direct and indirect reports following established organizational policies, procedures, and practices.

• Set clear goals and objectives, use metrics to measure performance, and hold employees accountable. Provide mentorship to improve performance and hold regular development meetings.

• Ensure diversity, equity, and inclusion are integrated as a guiding principle.

• Hold self and others accountable to meet commitments.

• Persist in accomplishing objectives to consistently achieve results despite any obstacles and setbacks that arise.

• Build positive relationships and infrastructures that designate Mass General Brigham Health Plan as a people-first organization.

• Chair various committees as appropriate.

• Participate in RFPs, RFIs, stewardship visits, sales visits as required and appropriate.

• Other duties as assigned with or without accommodation.

Qualifications

Qualifications:

• Graduate of an accredited medical school with verified internship and licensure. Valid Unrestricted MD license to practice in Massachusetts. Board Certification in a specialty.

• Must have at least 10 years of progressively responsible medical management experience, with at least 3 years as a senior leader of an organization and 5-10 years of clinical practice experience. Experience in Managed Health Care.

• Knowledge of Community Health Centers.

• Experience with commercial health insurance, Mass Health and or other state Medicaid programs a plus.
