The permanent/full-time Deputy Chief of Protective Services and Security will be under the general direction of the Executive Director and the Chief of Police in the Department of Police Services at the Department of State Hospitals - Atascadero (ASH). The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties but not limited to:

• Plan, organize and direct the work of the HPD, OSI, and fire service, if assigned
• Develop and monitor departmental, operational, equipment, and training budgets
• Analyze and evaluate security and/or enforcement issues in order to prepare recommendations for members of the Executive Team
• Assess, develop, and implement training programs for HPD and OSI staff to ensure compliance with all required training
• Recruit, interview, and select new personnel for new positions in the Police Department
• Support the mission of the HPD and set goals and objectives for the department
• Chair designated committees and staff training meetings
• Maintain close liaison with other law enforcement agencies and custodial agencies and utilize them as a resource to ensure that current operations are performed in the most fiscally responsible and professional manner possible

1. BE LIST ELIGIBLE: Successfully complete the competitive State civil service exam pertaining to this classification (No exam currently available) , OR
2. BE TRANSFER ELIGIBLE: Have current employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable (employees who wish to be considered based on transfer eligibility MUST meet the minimum qualifications of the classification per DPA Rule 250), OR
3. BE REINSTATEMENT ELIGIBLE: Have obtained previous permanent employment with the State of California in the same classification or in a classification that is comparable.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Equivalent to completion of the 12th grade. and
Either I Experience: Three years of experience in the California state service performing the duties of a Hospital Lieutenant.
Or II Experience: Five years of full-time paid peace officer experience, three years of which must have been as a second-line supervisor at a level comparable to the rank of Lieutenant. (Possession of a two- year Associate's Degree in Police Science or a related field in law enforcement may be substituted for one year of the required nonsupervisory experience. Possession of a Bachelor's Degree in Police Science or a related law enforcement field may be substituted for two years of the required nonsupervisory experience.) and Successful completion of the Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Basic Academy.
