Offers will be based on experience similar to the Port job being applied for as well as a review of pay rates for Port employees performing similar work. As Design Engineer II, you will support Seaport and Airport projects under the guidance of a Professional Engineer in the Port of Seattle Engineering Department, working through the planning, design, permitting and construction phases. You will further the capital development of the Port and act as a technical representative of the Port, develop evaluations, designs, drawings, analyses, specifications, and other work as needed on multidisciplinary engineering teams.
  • You will design and evaluate systems under the guidance of a Professional Engineer to facilitate operations within Aviation, Maritime, and Economic Development divisions, Environmental, Maintenance, and other business units.
  • You will support engineering design team on medium to large projects and lead small projects by conducting design activities including but not limited to field inspections, asset management, product selection, site visits, research, data entry, plan development, detailing, calculations, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, process organization and improvements, and code analysis.
  • You will coordinate with other structural and multidisciplinary design team members, internal customers, and consultants throughout design and construction phases on basic design elements.
  • You will develop and annotate drawings, provide direction to Design Technicians, and assist with AutoCAD drafting work when required.
  • You will write and edit engineering specifications, develop design calculations under the guidance of Professional Engineer.
  • You will develop technical documents, reports, and/or presentations, and present recommendations to Design Engineers, Senior Engineers, and/or Project Managers.
  • You will assist with field inspections and observations, including engineering construction support.


Who you are:

  • Experienced - You have three (3) years of relevant work experience in design engineering.
  • Educated - You possess a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or closely related field.
  • Desired - We hope you have Master's degree in Engineering, Business or closely related field, three (3) years of relevant experience in design engineering with work focused on roadways, airports, seaports, and/or terminals, successful completion of the NCEES Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam and ability to obtain licensure as a Professional Engineer in Washington State within one year.

You are proficient in computer office software suites, such as Microsoft Office and proficient in applied engineering mathematics. You are able to perform detail-oriented tasks.
  • Multi-tasker - You are able to multitask as a resource on multiple projects. You offer strong skills in collaborative teamwork for a common goal.


What else you need to know:

  • Driver's License - You will need a valid Washington State Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one, is required to travel locally to project sites.
  • Work Schedule - Your normal work schedule will be Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (40 hours per week). Slightly more flexible start and end times are available in this role.
  • Work Environment - This work will take place in a hybrid remote/in-office setting at Management's discretion with occasional exposure to all types of weather conditions during site visits and field work.
  • Washington State Residency Requirement - Employees must establish a residence in Washington state within 30 days of their first day of employment and must maintain a residence in Washington State during their employment with the Port of Seattle. If a position is eligible to telework, work performed while teleworking must be performed in Washington State.
  • Safety Requirements - You will be required to comply with all work rules, safety, and Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must pass a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) background check as well as a criminal history background check with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). Your employment will be contingent upon obtaining a Port of Seattle ID badge upon clearance.
  • Security Requirements - You will also be required to obtain a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) Customs Seal within 30 days of hire.
  • Security Requirements - As the successful candidate, you must obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC) within the first three months of employment.
  • Grade Review - The pay range and grade for non-represented positions are under review and subject to change as part of the Port's work to implement a new pay program. This review is intended to ensure that positions are aligned with the new program that will be implemented in 2024.
