Diagnostic Medical Physicist

Dallas, Texas

Employer: UT Southwestern Medical Center
Industry: Faculty and Physicians
Salary: Competitive
Job type: Full-Time

The Department of Radiology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, ranked the No. 1 hospital in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and the No. 2 hospital in Texas by U.S. News and World Report, is seeking a full-time ABR Board-Certified Diagnostic Medical Physicist in the Medical Physics Division. Candidate must have a PhD in an appropriate field of Physics or Engineering. A minimum three years of experience in X-ray imaging physics and eligibility for a Medical Physicist License in the State of Texas are required. Further certification and licensure in Nuclear Medicine Physics is desired but not required.

The Diagnostic Medical Physics Group consists of 12 medical physicists and clinical MRI scientists. It provides diagnostic physics support for Clements University Hospital and its affiliated clinics, Parkland Health and Hospital System, and Children's Health System. These activities include annual equipment performance checks, specification and acceptance testing of new imaging equipment, facility design, radiation shielding design and inspection, radiation dose estimation (including fetal doses) for exposure of patients and personnel, radiation dose management and tracking, accreditation support (ACR, TJC, etc.), regulatory support, general oversight of modality quality assurance programs, and troubleshooting of image quality problems. The group also supports clinical research by providing radiation dose estimates, supporting QA requirements, and assisting in developing specialized acquisition protocols as needed. Additionally, it works closely with a separate institutional Radiation Safety group to provide regulatory support to UT Southwestern and its associated hospitals and clinics. Although the Diagnostic Medical Physics Group is principally clinical, the selected individual will be expected to engage in academic activities appropriate to the university environment. A track record of research and publications in medical imaging informatics would be beneficial.

The Diagnostic Medical Physics Group supports about 500 pieces of equipment across all imaging modalities. Robust growth is anticipated based on demographic projections for the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area and plans to continue expansion of imaging services into adjacent communities.

Ranked in the Top 10 U.S. places to live with the highest pay adjusted to cost of living, the Dallas-Fort Worth area is a richly diverse metropolitan region with affordable housing, a thriving culinary scene, world-renowned arts districts, major professional sports teams, trendy entertainment venues, and unparalleled shopping opportunities. With more than 200 cities, each with its own identity and culture, the region is served by two commercial airports, as well as major highway and mass-transit systems, enabling an average commute time of about 28 minutes. North Texas is also home to 45 colleges and universities, more than 60 hospitals, and 7.1 million residents who enjoy an unemployment rate that's below the national average, relatively low crime rates, high-quality elementary and secondary schools and extensive parks and recreation.

Consideration may be given to applicants seeking less than a full-time schedule. Appointment rank will be commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code 51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
