Direct Hire Medical Director of Palliative Care Physician in Salem, Oregon

  • Shift details:
    • 10s
    • M-F, but as the team grows it will move into the weekend.
    • No call
    • Patient facing hours: varies per week.
    • Patient Encounters per day: 6 per day, combo of new, established and family meetings. This is better than average in the industry
  • Types of appointments:
    • Follow-up: yes
    • Consults: yes
    • New patients: N/A; inpatient service
  • Only physicians in the program, at this time no APP.
  • Team structure: MD's/RN's/Social workers/Chaplain/Medical Ethicist plus one Operations Specialist
  • Large team: 4 providers (including medical director), 2 RN and 2.5 Social Workers.
  • Current SH provider experience levels: 1-4 years post fellowship
  • Mentorship available: Yes
  • Good relationships with consulting hospital partners


  • Medical Director Candidate Experience preferences:
    • Candidates who are seasoned in their career.
    • Candidates should have more clinical experience than our current providers.
    • Leadership experience is necessary:
      • Preference is for someone who has formal leadership experience (medical director).
      • Without formal leadership experience we need candidates to demonstrate informal leadership experience and how it translates to a medical director role.
      • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Medical Director responsibilities:
    • Direct reports: 3 providers.
    • Practice guidelines.
    • Policy ownership
    • Sits on both the Cancer and Tumor committees.
    • Peer reviews
    • Partners with clinic manager for operational items.
    • Coaching providers
    • Resource and decision maker for clinical questions.
    • Primary point of contact for conflict and meditation with Palliative Care team and hospital partners.
    • Education for nurses and other clinical staff on Palliative Care
    • Evaluate strategic growth of the department.
    • Address grey areas in Palliative Care with other hospital departments mediate any items as well as create any needed guidelines.
