Summary of Position

The Director of Communications and Broadcasting oversees all internal and external communications, media relations and the club's TV and radio broadcast initiatives. The Director develops and executes strategic communications initiatives to enhance the overall image of the hockey club, including ownership, management, coaches, players, staff and community initiatives. He or she also manages all of the club's written content and publications, including the team's media guides, website content, game programs, game notes, press releases and all statistical publications. The Director serves as the primary contact for local and national media. This position also oversees broadcast related programming and club rightsholder agreements (Fox 5, Fox Sports, iHeart Media, AHLTV, etc.). This position oversees personal contact initiatives between management, coaches, players and the fans/community. The director acts as a club spokesperson, and oversees all players, coaches and leadership staff in facilitating media requests on both a local and national level.

Responsibilities
  • Lead Communications and Broadcasting Departments, overseeing external media and public relations, corporate communications in addition to TV and radio rightsholder agreements
  • Lead development and execution of strategic communications plans to generate favorable coverage of the hockey club, ownership, executive leadership, players and staff
  • Serve as an Executive Committee member for the club, helping craft the strategic business objectives and community-driven goals
  • Develop and oversee budgets for Communications and Broadcasting Departments, working to ensure compliance and operation within Company guidelines
  • Support President's communications needs, including media preparations, speech writing, and presentations
  • Oversee all team publication and written materials, including: media guide, post-season guide, game programs, press releases and game notes
  • Coordinate all news releases with counterparts in Anaheim
  • Oversee all interview requests from print, digital, TV and radio media members
  • Manage news conferences with local/national media when warranted
  • Service media at all games and practices, providing them with daily information and access to coaches/players
  • Develop strong relationship with members of the media, both on a local and national level
  • Primary team contact and spokesperson regarding all hockey-related issues
  • Prepare and train team executives, coaching staff and players for media interviews
  • Actively seek weekly TV/radio/written promotional interviews and media coverage with executive management, players, coaches
  • Coordinates hockey-related content in conjunction with the Digital Marketing Manager for website and social media platforms
  • Integrate media/public relations strategies with other department heads to provide consistent team message
  • Oversees TV and radio rightsholder agreements (FOX 5 San Diego, FOX Sports, iHeart Media, AHLTV) and the the day-to-day needs of all TV and radio broadcasts
  • Serve as Executive Producer for team's TV broadcasts and 30-minute bi-weekly behind-the-scenes show, hire crew and talent, and manage format, features and tone of telecasts
  • Oversee all archives and history of the hockey club
  • Manage and supervise Communications Department (Media & Communications Specialist, Communications Assistant) and Broadcasting Department (Play-by-Play Announcer and Color Analyst), and several part-time, game-day staff
  • Other duties as assigned

Skills
  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in sports and entertainment marketing or related field
  • Detail orientated with the ability to successfully handle multiple projects
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong writing skills and AP style proficiency
  • Understanding of sports marketplace and entertainment industry, familiar with media relations practices and community outreach a plus
  • Strong knowledge of the sport of hockey required, in addition to understanding of the American Hockey League, rules and players
  • Working knowledge of basic PC applications (Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook, etc.) and design applications such as Adobe Creative Suite (InDesign and Photoshop)
  • Must possess strong organizational skills, be self-motivated and creative
  • Must be creative, self-motivated and organized
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work nights and weekends when required for San Diego Gulls home and away games, as well as special events

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Education - Bachelor's Degree
