Job Summary
The Director for Clinical Operations for Surgical Services is a highly skilled professional practitioner with advanced clinical and leadership knowledge of the OR, PACU, Endoscopy, Same Day Surgery, Pre-Admission Testing and Sterile Processing functions for Mary Washington Hospital. The Director has 24-hour accountability for the direction of management, clinical and quality initiatives in addition to justification and utilization of resources needed for patient care delivery. The Director coordinates the development of an environment that promotes excellence in clinical practice and customer satisfaction while striving for optimal efficiency and productivity of all resources.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Directs the operations of assigned departments providing integration, facilitation, and direction to ensure smooth and efficient patient care management and resource utilization. Identifies real/potential problems affecting the service and implements solutions with follow through and communication.
  • Plans, monitors, and manages operational plans and budgets for departments. In conjunction with multiple stakeholders, develops, prioritizes capital equipment requests.
  • Participates in long-range planning and the development of departmental goals, strategic plans and objectives, as well as personnel, resources, space needs and equipment decisions. Appoints, develops, directly supervises clinical Managers in designated areas.
  • Develops policies and procedures for departments within scope of responsibility.
  • Measures success with pertinent and measurable data based on targeted goals.
  • Collaborates with nursing education to develop annual competency and service educational plan to ensure the delivery of quality care.
  • Leads change by developing, implementing, and evaluating quality and process improvement initiatives of the department. Seeks and utilizes input from managers; oversees change implementation.
  • Maintains knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements and develops methodologies to review and ensure compliance.
  • Participates in hospital departmental, administrative, and medical staff committees, and reports on committee activities.
  • Meets regularly with the divisional chief of surgery and other key physician leaders and stakeholders in the identification and coordination of program development work.
  • Responsible for leading and supporting managers in developing and improving operations to create optimal performance levels including quality improvement activities, monitoring, reviews, action plans. Oversees patient experience surveys, monitoring and action plans and customer service.
  • Directs staff development including responsibility and/or oversight for hiring, orientation, on-boarding, and retention and engagement.
  • Demonstrates leadership through coaching, assessment of clinical competencies, performance evaluations, corrective actions, and development opportunities to create a culture of learning.
  • Maintains professional competencies by attending educational programs, participating in professional organizations, and maintaining certifications as appropriate.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing required. Master's degree preferred.
  • More than 10 years related work experience required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of supervisory/management experience within related area required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a clinical health care setting, required.
  • Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
  • Excellent oral and written communication, interpersonal, problem solving and organizational skills.
  • Skill in exercising a high degree of initiative, judgment, discretion, and decision-making to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Skill in analyzing situations accurately and taking effective action; skill in organizing work, making assignments, and achieving goals and objectives.
  • Ability to lead and motivate individuals toward the accomplishment of work and organizational goals.
  • Ability to plan, schedule, prioritize and complete multiple projects and demands, and maintain control of workflow.
  • Ability to lead and direct multiple collaborative teams for large projects or groups and across functional areas.
