The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) seeks a strategic and influential leader to serve as the next Director of the Institute for Health & Equity (IHE). This is a unique and extraordinary opportunity to lead a premier interdisciplinary research and education institute dedicated to advancing health equity and eliminating health disparities, creating a healthier and more equitable future for all individuals and communities. The Institute serves as a catalyst for innovative research of the root causes of health disparities, premier education of clinicians and scientists, nurturing of strong community engagement initiatives, bioethics consultations, and policy advocacy to advance the best practices to foster health equity locally and throughout the world, aiming for equitable health outcomes for all individuals and communities. We partner with community health collaborators who live and work closest to the populations and with the public at large to make a direct impact on reducing disparities and advancing the health of all communities.

The Institute for Health & Equity (IHE) has an annual budget of more than $13 million including NIH grants and subcontracts, projects funded by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin endowment, major institutional support, other endowments, affiliate health care system contracts, and consulting services. Active in community engagement at the local, state, national and global levels, the Institute employs 150 faculty, staff, and PhD students active in biostatistics, epidemiology, social sciences, bioethics, medical humanities, public and community health, genetic counseling, precision medicine, and environmental sustainability. Additionally, the Institute leads nine (9) education programs with 150 students in the Graduate School and has faculty who direct courses in the Medical School.

The ideal leader will have a desire to continue to grow the Institute for Healthy & Equity and to continue to be a national leader in health equity, research, education, policy advocacy, and driving systemic changes by influencing the health and social services landscape. They should demonstrate experience leading individuals of diverse viewpoints and a willingness to change course based on advisory input. As an institute with established and expanding collaborators within the institution, there is an opportunity to continue to integrate technologies and data analytics to enhance research capabilities and support evidenced-based interventions. While there are many disciplines within the Institute, it is also an integral resource for other Departments, Centers, and Institutes within the institution with a growing opportunity to enhance those relationships and services. There is additionally a strong desire to continue to foster global collaborations to learn from international best practices and contribute to global efforts in achieving health equity.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be a visionary leader with a passion for advancing health equity. They will possess a strong background in health research, policy, and advocacy, and demonstrate a proven track record of implementing effective strategies to address health disparities. Candidates must hold a MD, DO, PhD, or an equivalent terminal degree in a field related to public health, health policy, social sciences, or bioethics which would qualify them for a faculty position at MCW. The ideal candidate will have an outstanding reputation in a relevant research field or practice, will demonstrate progressive leadership experience in areas pertinent to the assigned responsibilities within an academic medical center, and possess education or experience that reflects previous experience in managing financial aspects within an institute including revenue, expenses, and operating margin management.

It is crucial that the candidate has a proven track record of engaging with community partners and successfully aligning academic and community priorities to conduct impactful research and develop programs that enhance community health and healthcare systems. Excellent communication, collaboration, and strategic skills are indispensable for advancing the health of populations through community partnerships, innovative research, and effective educational programs.

MCW consists of a School of Medicine with campuses in Milwaukee, Green Bay and central Wisconsin, a School of Graduate Studies, and a Pharmacy School.
