The primary focus of the Director Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is to drive the development and execution of UHG's Enterprise U.S. OHS capabilities, operating model and team in partnership and alignment with the Enterprise EOHS leadership team. This position will report to the VP, EOHS Domestic Operations within UnitedHealth Group's Corporate Services division. This position will have direct management responsibility for a small team and indirect responsibility for influencing a broad group of stakeholders across UnitedHealth Group.

In collaboration with UnitedHealth Group, UnitedHealthcare, and Optum senior leaders, this position will develop the business capabilities, programs, and solutions necessary to support and deliver upon UnitedHealth Group's enterprise OHS vision and strategy.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop recommended UnitedHealth Group OHS strategy, operating model, and organizational structure
  • Operationalize agreed upon strategy and operating model through creation of sustainable, efficient, and automated processes and technology and data enablement
  • Build and lead a team of high performing individuals who can operationalize the overall strategy and operating model
  • Lead OHS knowledge and resource development, implementation, and monitoring
  • Lead monitoring and assessments of OHS content, operations, and data reporting completeness and accuracy
  • Leverage evidence-based medical services, compliance, regulatory requirements, quality assurance and clinical best practices
  • Ensure accurate interpretation of clinical literature and applied understanding to OHS programs and strategy
  • Review and interpret policies, accreditation standards, regulations, etc. related to OHS topics
  • Lead, inspire, motivate, and train colleagues and team members to achieve established outcomes of OHS strategy
  • Communicate OHS risks and exposures to senior leaders across UnitedHealth Group
  • Provide subject matter expertise for policies, key initiatives, incidents, exposures
  • Utilize data to deliver program key performance indicators achieving overall program objectives
  • Manage to departmental budget - SG&A
  • Collaborate with the UnitedHealth Group Employee Benefits teams to assist with development and enhancement of employee health and wellness programs
  • Collaborate with UnitedHealth Group Medical Affairs team to align, as appropriate, OHS vision and strategy with the Quality and Patient Safety strategy and initiatives

Required Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of proven success in developing and operationalizing strategy, high level tactical planning, and establishing and leading teams responsible for end-to-end (strategy, design, develop, implement, ongoing process improvement) large, complex initiative implementations spanning across multiple functional teams
  • 7+ years of experience within a complex matrix organization, healthcare operations or insurance company; proven organizational agility
  • Demonstrated experience with occupational health and safety regulatory requirements and best industry practices (local, state, OSHA, HIPPA, CDC, JCAHO, CMS, etc.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of workers' compensation, DOT, OSHA, and other applicable legislative regulations
  • Proven experience developing experienced, strategic, high performing teams

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced health and safety or related degree or certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
  • Experience leveraging leadership, collaboration and influencing skills across multiple functional groups in a complex matrix organization
  • Demonstrated executive presence and experience presenting to executive level leaders
  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Power Point, Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Proven experience managing organizational growth and change
  • Ability to travel < 25%

Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to local labor markets, education, work experience, certifications, etc. UnitedHealth Group complies with all minimum wage laws as applicable.
