Job Description

Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director (AED) of Public Affairs and Community Relations, provides media relations, marketing, communications, and strategic planning support for Queens Hospital. This position must be able to assume leadership duties and responsibilities on behalf of the AED. This position provides related efforts to increase positive visibility to the community and promote the hospital's mission, services, and centers of excellence. This position supports NYC Health + Hospitals corporate initiatives.

General tasks and responsibilities will include:
  • Able to assume leadership duties and responsibilities on behalf of the AED as assigned by the AED, including meetings, media events, and spokesperson.
  • Identify good news, staff appointments, patient stories, new programs and services, and other major achievements to promote with the media and the public.
  • Write press releases, media advisories, talking points and respond to media inquiries.
  • Develop digital content - photo and video - to support all communications platforms.
  • Proactively pitch stories to the media.
  • Assist in managing the hospital's social media platforms
  • Build and support community outreach and partnerships.
  • Develop and coordinate ongoing patient-focused health initiatives and special events.
  • Develop, implement, and sustain partnerships with national and local organizations to collectively bring about health awareness to the communities and staff that the hospital serves.
  • Support programs that help motivate staff.
  • Assist, plan, and implement staff-related events and activities.


Specific individual activities may include:
  • Write engaging press releases, newsletter stories, story pitches, etc., to promote accomplishments, initiatives, and human-interest stories.
  • Develop media events that include media advisories, press releases, press conferences, announcements, interviews and tours.
  • Partner with and provide marketing support to various interdepartmental management teams to promote corporate required initiatives.
  • Plan, implement and direct the execution of major outreach events such as health fairs and corporate health initiatives.
  • Promote medical and mental health experts to speak to local community boards and organizations as well as to be featured in high-profile events.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications or a related field; and
2. Five (5) years of satisfactory experience executing communications strategies and designing and implemented integrated communications plans, three (3) years of which must have been in a responsible administrative, managerial or supervisory capacity; or
3. A satisfactory equivalent of education, training, and experience.

  • Experience with social media strategy and marketing.
  • Ability to translate health industry concepts into lucid, concise messages for the media and public.
  • Ability to work quickly to meet demands of news cycle; work flexible hours.
  • Prior professional experience in healthcare or nonprofit environment, knowledge of health industry policy and healthcare reform issues.
