Brief Description of Duties:The Director of Development will lead fundraising efforts for University Advancement with primary focus on securing support for the Division of Student Affairs. Stony Brook's Division of Student Affairs is a student-centered team committed to student growth, development, empowerment, and success. The Director will collaborate closely with both Advancement and Student Affairs, designing a comprehensive fundraising plan and strategy for areas that focus on student success. These include student health, wellness, recreation, student life, career development, and residential life. Responsibilities include meeting with key prospects, individual donors, and corporate sponsors to cultivate relationships and solicit gifts. The Director must meet clearly defined annual metrics and have experience managing multiple priorities and donor/client relationships.

Additionally, the Director will manage a team of leadership annual giving officers, and will lead the team to successfully execute a metrics driven program in securing new and increased donors, as well as building and supporting a pipeline of prospects who may be the University's future major gift donors. The Director will be responsible for the strategic direction and growth of annual cash gifts of between $10,000 and $99,000.

This position reports to both the Assistant Vice President of Constituent Experience and the Senior Director of Development for West Campus while working on a daily basis with the Assistant Vice President for Business Operations for Student Affairs. To be successful in this role, the Director of Development must be self-motivated, strategic, effective as a communicator, storyteller, and coach who is committed to the success of Stony Brook students, and adept at working both independently and in collaboration with a team.

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive and successful fundraising program. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects capable of lead annual ($10,000 - $99,000) and major ($100,000+) gifts. Pursue and steward corporate sponsorships that support various student-focused services, marquee student events, and campus traditions. Achieve specific and measurable goals for contacts, portfolio management, proposals presented, and dollars raised. Collaborate with the Student Affairs marketing team to develop print, digital, and website materials that communicate campus needs to prospective donors and corporate sponsors.
  • Serve as a member of the Stony Brook Advancement team, coordinating efforts with University Advancement, participating in various tasks and functions, and communicating clearly with colleagues about goals, progress, and activities.
  • Hire, train and supervise lead cohorts of annual giving officers; establish and monitor goals, provide performance feedback and coaching, and support professional development; direct team and manage workflow, prioritizing and delegating work; complete annual performance management procedures; manage performance issues; is responsible for using independent, consistent and fair judgment in exercising authority; develop procedures, assign and prioritize work, and ensure that the resources needed to accomplish work are provided.
  • Serve as a member of the Student Affairs Leadership Council and represent the Division of Student Affairs on university committees. Develop exceptional working partnerships that support collaborative decision-making. Possess the creativity, flexibility, and resourcefulness to function effectively within the university culture. Serve as a member of the Stony Brook Advancement team, coordinating efforts with the broader work of University Advancement, participating as a professional and team member in various Advancement tasks and functions, and communicating clearly and consistently with colleagues about goals, progress, and activities.
  • Participate in opportunities that promote professional learning, growth, and development (i.e., classes, training, committees, webinars). Contribute to the Division of Student Affairs and Stony Brook University by attending and/or supporting events, activities, and programs. Other duties or projects assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes:This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.
