The University of Virginia is seeking a Director of Development to lead fundraising for the School of Continuing and Professional Studies (SCPS). SCPS provides transformational educational experiences for lifelong learners who seek to complete degrees, certificates, or professional programs to advance their careers, enrich their lives, and impact their communities.

Reporting to the Managing Director of Development in the University's Office of Advancement, this position will work with the SCPS Dean, and SCPS leadership, on a range of strategic fundraising initiatives. The role is also supported with core University Advancement capabilities in areas such as prospect research, university annual giving, alumni relations, and advancement communications.

In conjunction with University Advancement colleagues, the Director of Development will design and execute a fundraising strategy for SCPS that supports the discovery of new donors and helps build a pipeline of major gift prospects for SCPS. We are looking for a candidate that has an entrepreneurial spirit, is excited about building a new fundraising program, and has significant interest in expanding access to education for lifelong learners in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Key responsibilities:
  • Develop and manage a portfolio of major gift ($100K+) and leadership gift prospects and drive solicitations for endowed and current use support for the School.
  • Develop a comprehensive fundraising plan to include strategies for building the donor pipeline from individual donors, corporations, and foundations.
  • Strategically leverage the Dean's engagement with donors and prospects to enhance awareness, maximize reach, and optimize stewardship.
  • Partner with Corporate & Foundation Relations and Prospect Management & Research to identify potential donors, including individuals, corporations, and foundations.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues across the University and pursue a team approach to fundraising.
  • Collaborate with University Annual Giving to develop a strategy for direct marketing and digital engagement to grow the annual donor base.
  • In conjunction with program leads, provide targeted support to School volunteers, including advisory board members, and help to develop an engaged community of alumni.
Required Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree

Experience: Eight years of relevant experience

A valid driver's license

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Proven track record as a major gift officer, soliciting gifts of $100K+ from individuals and/or corporations.
  • Prior experience in the adult education, degree completion, and workforce development space.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and develop fundraising strategies in collaboration with University leadership.
  • Track record of demonstrating a high degree of initiative, flexibility, and the skills to shape, and be shaped by a new fundraising initiative.
  • Experience using data to evaluate and plan.

This position is an exempt level, benefited position. This is a restricted position and is dependent upon project need, availability of funding, and performance. The anticipated hiring range is $110,000 - $125,000 and will be commensurate with education and experience. The University will perform background checks on all new hires prior to employment.
