Job Summary

In collaboration with Sibley Memorial Hospital management team, the Director of Excellence in Nursing Practice and Education directs the professional development of patient care nursing services, understands healthcare issues, trends and technology; and advises the strategic planning, management, service delivery, quality improvement, organization, evaluation of nursing standards of professional practice. This leadership position shares administrative authority and responsibility for the practice of nursing at Sibley Hospital.

Role Accountabilities Include:
  • Develops a vision, mission statement and objectives for the based on JHHS priorities.
  • Remains abreast of new market and clinical information, adjusting service objectives accordingly, in order to ensure optimal clinical and financial outcomes. Proactively seeks opportunities along the continuum of care that preserve a Sibley customer base and protect our revenue stream.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the goals, objectives, and operating principles of the division and applies such in making appropriate administrative decision.
  • Effectively selects, orients, evaluates, and coaches new hires and current staff. Serves as a role model for staff, other departments, and physicians by identifying and resolving patient care issues, demonstrating effective problem-solving abilities and utilizing flexible, creative interpersonal skills to further the objectives of the service.
  • Ensures quality patient care by monitoring, evaluating, and continuously improving the patient care delivery system, in compliance with all federal and local guidelines/regulations and Joint Commission Standards.
  • Develops, communicates, and enculturates the professional practice model for nursing in conjunction with nursing staff and leadership.
  • Collaborates with the Chief Nursing Officer and other directors in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the nursing strategic plan.
  • Directs all aspects of nursing and related clinical education and professional development, including but not limited to orientation, ongoing competencies.
  • Facilitates the creation/maintenance of a positive work environment.
  • Coordinates ongoing evidence collection; coordinates document preparation and submission for Magnet Designation and other credentials recognizing Director of Excellence in Nursing Practice and Education

  • Serve as the expert for nursing practice and standards, including but not limited to ANCC Magnet and Pathway to Excellence, ANA Scope and Standards of Nursing Practice; ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, HRO, AONL Nursing Leadership Competencies
  • Communicates routinely with the Chief Nursing Officer concerning policy recommendations and suggested courses of action pertinent to the efficient operation of nursing departments. Serves as the department policy liaison within the organization and serves as the nursing representative on the system policy committee
  • Participates in and facilitates or chairs special projects pertaining to the quality of patient care services.
  • Develops, reviews, and revises nursing standards of practice and care applying evidence-based practice or research when appropriate.
  • Serves as a resource and provides direction on regulations and nursing professional standards, including the DC Nurse Practice Act.
  • Directs the development of educational programs that promote professional excellence for nursing and clinical support roles by partnering with nursing leadership and other key stakeholders.
  • Effectively maintains productive lines of communication with customers (patients, families, physicians, and staff), encouraging feedback, identifying potential improvements, facilitation problem solving, and role modeling successful customer relationship skills.
  • Accurately prepares and submits periodic reports to include Performance Improvement initiatives, clinical and administrative progress, suggestions for new/expanded programs. Prepares and monitors budgets for all aspects of the service, adjusting and modifying as circumstances change.
  • Monitors resource utilization, develops creative strategies, and uses resources wisely to ensure standards of care are met within a fiscally sound personnel budget. Uses bench marking data and outcomes measures as appropriate.
  • Participates in educational programs to assure continued personal growth. Maintains a presence in professional organizations.
  • Collaborates within the organization and system on standardization of nursing practice and education when applicable.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Simulation to establish simulation through a multidisciplinary lens.
  • Oversee all bridge and transition to practice programs and clinical partnerships.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert in clinical product acquisition and partners with supply chain around the vetting and procurement of resources.

Qualifications:
  • Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the District of Columbia.
  • Master's Degree in Nursing or a health care related field required, doctoral degree preferred.
  • Specialty Certification required (NEA-BC preferred)
  • National certification required.
  • Experience with program certification/designation (Residency, Magnet, Pathway)
  • At least five years' demonstrated experience in a nursing leadership role to include direct supervision of a team. Experience in project development, management and implementation, to include clinical and financial criteria required.
  • Experience in development and delivery of education, including didactic, theoretical and clinical curriculum material.
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing theory, practice, and administration to plan and evaluate nursing standards and practice.
  • Additional knowledge and experience with ANCC and other credentialing programs preferred.
  • Current CPR Certification required.
