The Director of Externships will be responsible for teaching and administering the law school's externship program. The Director will report to the Vice Dean and work with full-time and adjunct faculty and the Experiential Learning Specialist to ensure compliance with ABA Standards and educational excellence.

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Coordinates the Externship Program, in collaboration with full-time faculty.
  • Works with other offices to promote externship placements and to support a robust pro bono program.
  • Collaborates with Office of Professional Development in areas of overlap between the externship program and the law school's pro bono program, including combining efforts where projects overlap.
  • In conjunction with the Office of Professional Development, works to minimize redundancies and confusion for placements and students.
  • Recommends for hire and supervises adjunct faculty working in the Externship Program.
  • Supervises the Experiential Learning Specialist, a full-time staff member.
  • Provides placement supervisor training and engagement, intensive student advising, placement approval, and managing enrollment and assessment systems.
  • Advises Externship students, approves field placements, and confirms student planning.
  • Teaches one or more externship classes either live or online.
  • Serves as a liaison to field supervisors, field placements, and other external partners, and stakeholders.
  • Develops and facilitates employer relations to create externship opportunities.
  • Conducts site visits and facilitates student-placement relationships.
  • Manages, along with the Experiential Learning Specialist, significant externship documentation and records.
  • Conducts regular orientations for students interested in and enrolled in externships.
  • Conducts periodic program reviews to improve learning outcomes and student experiences.
  • Works with students and placements to resolve problems.
  • Manages, along with the Experiential Learning Specialist, a database containing student placement records and evaluations.
  • Provides guidance regarding application procedures, placement requirements, and law school policies.
  • Represents the school at externship conferences and on listservs.
  • Evaluates and monitors the quality of the externship experience.
  • Assists with the coordination of other experiential learning opportunities (clinics and simulation courses).
  • Supervises students participating in the externship program, including one-off and new experiences.
General Responsibilities
  • Implements the organization's strategic vision and direction by developing, initiating, and/or supporting new programs and services, creating annual work plans, and operating within a board-approved balanced budget.
  • Ensures the maintenance of effective office management, financial management, record-keeping, and equipment and software.
  • Plans, directs and implements programs or events, including developing branding strategy and targeting audiences for these events.
  • Oversees or represents the program in communications to program participants, supporting institutions, collaborators in other units, community partners, vendors and the public. Troubleshoots and resolves issues and programs.
  • Provides mechanisms, training, and advice on a variety of issues such as budget management software and advanced strategies for timely spending of grant funds.
  • Oversees research and academic activities budgets for programs. Identifies funding requirements and funding sources to ensure adequate resources to sustain program goals. Leads grant writing.
  • Evaluates the performance of lower-level staff, recommends development and performance plans, promotions and disciplinary action and is accountable for consistent administration of university policies.
  • Keep abreast of best practices to create and implement policies and procedures that deliver a quality program experience.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree.
Preferred
  • Juris Doctor strongly preferred.
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 5 years in related field.
Preferred
  • 3 years of experience in the practice of law.
  • Supervisory or managerial experience strongly preferred.

Working Conditions / Demands

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus.
