Job Description

We are looking for a dynamic visual thinker to lead the world-renowned POY and CPOY photojournalism programs.

We invite you join our team in leading students at the world's leading journalism school to partner with the best photojournalists working today. The successful candidate will use their unique energy, creativity and curiosity to chart the future for POY and CPOY. They will illuminate the critical role of visual journalism in our society and how it contributes to the university's educational mission.

The director oversees the development of POY and CPOY, collaborating with academic and industry partners and providing leadership in emerging areas of visual journalism. Responsibilities include managing two international competitions, attending industry conferences, and partnering to create educational initiatives. This position works in collaboration with the CPOY Co-Director and reports to the RJI Director of Photojournalism & News Archiving.

Established in 1944, the Pictures of the Year International (POY) is recognized the world over and is a cornerstone program of the Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute at the Missouri School of Journalism. The College Photographer of the Year (CPOY) was founded a year later, in 1945. It attracts entries from hundreds of college photographers around the globe.

Expectations for success in this role:
  1. Manage all aspects of the POY and CPOY competitions, communicate with partners, and supervise students and volunteers. Develop an industry outreach strategy that includes recruiting high-quality judges, prioritizing the educational mission of the competitions and building relationships with the world's leading editors, photographers and visual educators.
  2. Supervise the publishing of content for all competition online platforms. Work with staff and students to maintain online presences and develop the social media strategies.
  3. Coordinate with affiliated programs and partners such as POY Latam and POY Asia to cross-promote and support each other.
  4. Engage students in the classroom and competition judging. Collaborate with university faculty and staff to incorporate POY and CPOY into the teaching curriculum at the University of Missouri and support student involvement.
  5. Work with the RJI Photojournalism director, CPOY co-director and staff to develop and manage vendor, sponsor and donor relationships.
  6. Work with the RJI Photojournalism director, RJI executive director and finance officers regarding the budgets. Work with staff to coordinate travel and event logistics.
  7. Develop professional relationships with journalists, professors, and others in related fields to support the competitions and advance visual journalism. Attend professional events and initiate partnerships to support the competitions and the university.
  8. Research, write and publish articles about the competitions and visual journalism. Participate in interviews as needed, including publishing a newsletter and annual report.
  9. Seek out ways in which the competitions can support the university's educational mission, including teaching and mentoring students.
  10. Assist RJI and the Missouri School of Journalism in other duties as assigned.

Shift

40 hours/week, Weekdays 8-5 and some weekend days nights may be required

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience and at least 6 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary

Preferred Qualifications

* At least 6 years of professional visual journalism experience reporting and/or editing work across print, online and social media platforms.

* Strong organizational and communication skills. A desire and ability to work with people in a collegial environment .

* Significant experience working in photojournalism to report, edit and publish stories. International experience is a plus.

* A thorough understanding of the history of photojournalism and a working knowledge of the current media landscape.

* Experience in managing interns, teaching, or an equivalent responsibility working with students.

Anticipated Hiring Range

Salary Range: $80,000 - $88,000

Grade: GGS-12
