The Director is the Office of Research's (OR) senior research and industry sponsored agreements officer, overseeing the daily management and execution of complex legal agreements between the University of California's Office of the President (UCOP), faculty and sponsors, and serves as a strategic thought partner to OR's executive leadership. The Director provides strategic and tactical leadership to a team of Intellectual Property (IP) and Research Administrator (RA) professionals who manage all aspects of contract/agreement preparation and execution. The Director is also accountable for unit operations, including relevant standard operating procedures, responsibility matrixes (RACIs), metrics, templates, and other internal guidance documents. The Director will oversee and manage special projects related to the portfolio, provide practical advice and/or solutions to business issues, and interpret complex facts in areas of high to moderate ambiguity. The Director will develop/ nurture strong collaborations with the UC Davis Office of Research Technology Transfer and Sponsored Programs Offices. Finally, the Director manages all communications and public relations/outreach related to the portfolio and performs other duties as assigned to meet the operational needs of the research enterprise.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in science or engineering related experience/training.
  • Minimum ten years of contracting, licensing, research, and/or research administration experience.
  • Minimum of five years of experience negotiating contracts with a proven track record of successfully negotiating complex agreements and business contracts including ability to understand and craft legal contract language typical for agreements transferring intellectual property including letter, option and license agreements and other transactions relating to the transfer of patentable and non-patentable technology.
  • Excellent people skills to effectively engage with industry partners on behalf of the UC, to achieve mutually beneficial objectives.
  • Experience leading complex IP and related negotiations with external business and not-for-profit entities
  • Minimum two years of supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of US intellectual property law, including patent and copyright law and relevant government regulations such as the Bayh-Dole Act.
  • Knowledge of technology environment; trends and market conditions across industry sectors; and university research administration.
  • Advanced written and verbal communication skills to communicate information clearly and effectively to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Familiarity with technology tools for use in office and IP portfolio management

Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (JD) is strongly preferred.
  • A minimum of five years' experience in a Technology Transfer or Sponsored Programs Office in higher education is preferred.
  • Extensive knowledge of US intellectual property law, including patent and copyright law and relevant government regulations such as the Bayh-Dole Act.
  • Knowledgeable of UC policy, university/industry relations, and University of California policies that relate to IP, licensing, and conflict of interest.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues.
  • Ability to provide assistance, provide regularly scheduled summaries of activities, and respond to other requests by the Associate Director or Executive Director.

The Office of Research (OR) supports, facilitates, and promotes UC Davis' (UCD) world-class research enterprise by a) providing essential services and resources that enhance research and other creative endeavors; b) enabling partnerships and collaborations among researchers and between UC Davis, government, industry, and other research enterprises; and c) developing infrastructure and policy that promote innovation, an entrepreneurial culture, communication, and compliance for the UC Davis research enterprise.

The Office of Research fosters research across disciplines by enhancing the research experience through effective stewardship of resources, policies, compliance, and expertise and by developing tools and educational programs as the responsible steward of the campus research enterprise. Research and Industry-Sponsored Agreements is the central office with direct oversight for all material transfer agreements, data use agreements, copyright licenses, research collaboration agreements, industry-sponsored research agreements, and other assigned contract and/or agreement types.
