The Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research conducts basic science and translational research within the Department of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine. The Wells Center houses more than 200 faculty investigators, staff, and trainees seeking answers to the most pressing questions related to childhood illness.

With the collaboration between scientists and physicians, the center aims to increase knowledge of causes and mechanisms of serious pediatric diseases. Our goal is to develop innovative approaches to the diagnosis and treatment of sick children in Indiana and beyond.

Job Summary

Department-Specific Responsibilities
  • Serves as senior lab manager and building operations manager in the Cancer Research Building (R4).
  • Monitors the day-to-day activities and staff of the research facilities.
  • Provides training to lab staff as needed, and assuring compliance with safety policies and other regulatory compliance.
  • Manages laboratory operations of the R4 building and coordinate and facilitate communications with internal and external customers regarding building operations.
  • Provides support to research faculty and staff based at R4/Wells Center.
  • Coordinates activities of shared core facilities and monitors the use of these facilities for research projects.
  • Assists the investigators in conducting research requiring expertise in the application and adaptation of selected research techniques, equipment, and procedures.
  • Supervises research staff during use of core facilities.
  • Participates in protocol development, data analysis and report preparation.
  • Maintains fiscal accountability of the program and approves expenditures for the core laboratories.
  • Responsible for quality assurance, proper documentation (including SOPs for core laboratories), reporting, and record keeping related to all common shared equipment and space including that required by institutional oversight committees (i.e., IACUC and IRB).
  • Conducts regular meetings with lab representatives in R4/Wells Center to discuss various issues in common laboratory operation and responsibilities.
General Responsibilities
  • Provides day-to-day operational management of Facility Operations staff.
  • Establishes short-term operational objectives.
  • Identifies operational issues and/or areas of improvement and implements solutions to improve processes and/or operational efficiency.
  • Analyzes, monitors, and evaluates performance of assigned staff; establishes work priorities, conducts performance reviews, and provides corrective action as needed.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and effective scheduling; participates and informs employment decisions for assigned staff.
  • Provides direct supervision and oversight of assigned staff and activities; impacts, and is held accountable for, the performance of team and/or assigned staff.
  • Ensures and provides training to assigned staff to improve Facility Operations; researches and identifies development opportunities for assigned staff.
  • Researches and stays up-to-date on new industry Facility Operations standards, best practices, and emerging technology; keeps next-level leader(s) informed of trends as well as significant problems.

EDUCATION

Required
  • Bachelor's degree in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field
WORK EXPERIENCE

Required
  • 2 years in business, inventory management, controls, facilities management, or related field
Preferred
  • Experience with Lab equipment (including complex biochemical and optical instruments), computers, phones
  • 2 years of research experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES

Required
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

Working Conditions / Demands

This role regularly requires the ability to effectively communicate. This role frequently requires the ability to handle equipment. This role frequently requires the ability to remain stationary and ascend/descend ladders/stairs. This role requires the ability to move objects weighing up to 25 pounds. The role requires the ability to detect items in close proximity as well as far away; discern between colors; detect objects in peripheral space of self; discern items in detail; and to have good depth perception. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.
