Job Description

  1. Establishes Social Work Department policies, methods, procedures, and program assignments and development for Behavioral Health department; determines program priorities within the scope of program planning and in coordination with BH leadership.
  2. Develops, plans and administers social work programs to support patient care.
  3. Coordinates social work programs for the Behavioral Health department and assures that programs are related to health care setting and system objectives in support of effective health, medical and psychiatric care.
  4. Collaborates with Behavioral Health administration and professional staff in planning social work participation within the health care setting, in education and training programs and in formulation of policy and practices in accordance with objectives of the health care setting.
  5. Develops communications programs to achieve the appropriate interpretation of the psychiatric and medical social work program.
  6. Organizes the personnel of the Behavioral Health SW department into areas of responsibility, authority and specialization; staffs, directs, guides and controls departmental activity.
  7. Evaluates personnel performance and departmental work progress, establishes departmental work standards and practices, provides leadership to attain effective productivity, and initiates action to accomplish objectives of the Social Work Department.
  8. Develops, establishes and administers training programs for social work personnel and in-service training for professional and non-professional personnel for social work activity in support of patient care. In addition, will administer Social Work training opportunities for interested interns and externs.
  9. Participates in formulation and development of health care setting policies regarding participation in community planning with respect to psychiatric social work service.
  10. Provides consultation to community agencies regarding use of health care settings and activities relating to psychiatric social work.
  11. Formulates, plans, directs and initiates research objectives and programs in areas of social work, and coordinates cooperative research projects with other departments.
  12. Evaluates and audits social work programs and program accomplishments and makes recommendations for appropriate action.
  13. Maintains relationships with professional organizations in social services, social work and related disciplines; keeps abreast of new developments and approaches, with particular reference to psychiatric, health and medical care; and evaluates and makes appropriate recommendations for social work improvements.
  14. Represents the health care setting as a participating educator of other professional disciplines and personnel of health and mental health settings.
  15. Maintains ultimate responsibility for delivery of BH social work services involving direct services to patients and their families, consultative services to health care setting staff and Physicians, and consultative relationships with community programs.
  16. May act as a consultant on discharge planning.
  17. Performs other related duties, as directed.


Minimum Qualifications

  1. Valid license as an LMSW (Licensed Master Social Worker) or LCSW (Licensed Clinical Social Worker) issued by the New York State Education Department (NYSED); and eight (8) years of experience in social work activities, of which four (4) years must have been in a health or medical setting, including psychiatric social work, and four (4) years must have been in a supervisory, consultative and/or administrative capacity in a social work organization, health or medical care setting, or organization adhering to acceptable standards; or
  2. A satisfactorily equivalent combination of training and experience. However, all applicants must possess a valid Social Worker license, as described in "1" above.
