Laboratory personnel maintain close working relationships and participate in collaborative research projects with other University of Georgia personnel stationed in Tifton [approximately 400 Coastal Plain Experiment Station employees (85 faculty) and 80 Cooperative Extension employees (40 faculty)]. The TVDIL also works closely with the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and College of Veterinary Medicine personnel including the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in Athens, GA. Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Fort Valley State University and Valdosta State University are also collaborative partners in southern Georgia.

Position Summary

The College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Georgia (UGA) invites applications and nominations for the position of Director of the Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic & Investigational Laboratory (TVDIL) located in Tifton, Georgia. The Tifton Veterinary Diagnostic & Investigational Laboratory (TVDIL) Director will lead a team of five faculty and 24 staff in a full service, AAVLD accredited, NAHLN tier 1 system laboratory with biopsy, clinical pathology, necropsy, virology/serology, microbiology, and molecular biology sections. The Director is responsible for all operational activities of the laboratory including budget development and management, supervision of professional and technical staff, and management of the quality program. The TVDIL Director works closely with the Executive Director of the Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories and the Director of the Athens Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in coordinating veterinary diagnostic activities across Georgia and in interacting with the Georgia Department of Agriculture, the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians, other state diagnostic laboratories, the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL), the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN), the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network (GPLN) & other state and federal agencies. The Director reports to the Executive Director of the Georgia Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories. Additional responsibilities of the TVDIL Director may include instruction of veterinary and graduate students and residents, provision of diagnostic services, and the pursuit of both basic and applied research in his or her area of expertise. The TVDIL Director will also interact with the College of Veterinary Medicine Advisory Board.

Additional Requirements
  • Advanced training in an applicable veterinary specialty or board certification in a relevant veterinary specialty.
  • At least three years' experience working in or directly with a diagnostic lab.
The successful candidate will be appointed as either a Clinical (non-tenure track), Tenure Track, or Tenured faculty member at the Associate or Full Professor level, depending upon qualifications.

To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must be appointed as an associate or full professor, be tenured at their current institution or have been tenured at a prior institution, and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire.

Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
  • An advanced degree in a relevant field.
  • At least three years' administrative experience including management of personnel and budgets, regulatory policy, and quality management systems, a broad knowledge of diagnostic laboratory disciplines, and evidence of strong communication, administrative, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Qualifications consistent with appointment at the professor level are preferred.
