Leader and Co-Institute Director for the Herma Heart Insitute

The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) and Children's Wisconsin (CW) are seeking a visionary and innovative individual who will serve as a significant leader to our Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgery Division and Herma Heart Institute (HHI).

The ideal candidate would be nationally recognized for their contributions to all aspects of congenital heart surgery, and cardiovascular-related leadership, academic scholar, and mentoring. This is an excellent opportunity for the chosen candidate to work in partnership with Cardiology leadership and the HHI Executive Administrator to lead the vision and strategic direction for the entire HHI across our four key missions: clinical care, community engagement, research, and education. We are looking for an inspiring lead to further advance the national reputation of our well established academic congenital heart program that boasts one of the most experienced teams with state-of-the-art facilities in the Midwest. As Co-Institute Director for the HHI, the successful candidate will report directly to the Clinical Executive Leadership & In-Chiefs Cabinet which includes the President and Chief Operating Officer of Children's Wisconsin and Chief Executive Officer of Children's Specialty Group (CSG).

The successful candidate will also lead the Specialty Practice Unit (SPU) of Cardiothoracic Surgery and be Co-Medical Director of Cardiothoracic Surgery. In this additional role the new leader will partner with our current surgical team and oversee the overall administrative, academic, and clinical outcomes of the Congenital Cardiothoracic Surgery Section. This is an ideal opportunity to further leverage our existing surgical expertise and continue strengthening our national reputation to be a leader in quality, outcomes and research related to congenital heart disease patient care. As the SPU leader the successful candidate will report to the Surgeon-in-Chief with in CSG and CW.

The candidate must have significant leadership experience and a vision to ensure that the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery program and HHI grows in rank and reputation. Additionally, they will play an instrumental role in continuing to sustain and grow this excellent program in clinical quality and outcomes, research, and education.

Key Opportunity Highlights:
  • As Co-Director and physician executive for Children's Wisconsin, provide guidance to the largest pediatric cardiac care center in the state of Wisconsin and is a national leader in pediatric cardiology and heart surgery with over annually over 450 heart surgeries, 400 heart procedures, 22,000 diagnostic procedures in 16 locations across the state of Wisconsin.
  • Help to lead a vibrant group of pediatrics cardiologists comprised of 87 providers from multiple disciplines. In addition, to 7 principal investigators with multiple current NIH funded projects, and a robust quality and outcomes program.
  • Lead the vision and strategic direction for the entire HHI across our four key missions: clinical care, community engagement, research, and education.
  • New definitive agreement between MCW and CW provides a visionary platform for innovative growth and collaboration across the region.
  • Leverage strong institutional commitment and comprehensive resources to prioritize the recruitment, retention, and development of diverse, world-class faculty and staff.
  • Facilitate an innovative pediatric research strategic plan in partnership with the Children's Research Institute and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
    • Serve locally, nationally, and globally as a trusted external-facing physician leader for Children's Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin.
    • Engage an outstanding philanthropic community with a long history of generosity in partnership with a proven Department of Advancement.

Children's Specialty Group

The Children's Specialty Group (CSG) is a joint venture between Children's Wisconsin and the Medical College of Wisconsin. With over 70 specialties and 675 physicians and APPs, CSG has an annual net patient revenue of ~$200M. Last year, CSG physicians and APPs had 220,000 outpatient visits at 13 regional care sites, 67,000 EDTC visits, over 9,000 admissions; and the CSG surgical team performed 17,500 cases.

Children's Wisconsin is the largest provider of pediatric healthcare in the state, serving the children and families of Wisconsin - with more than 1.3 million annual connections with kids and families statewide, Children's provides a wide range of care and support - everything from routine care to lifesaving advances and treatment options, foster care and adoption services, child advocacy, and an insurance plan. In 2021, Children's had net patient revenues of $1.1 billion ($1.7 billion including other operating revenues) and provides the highest level of care through American College of Surgeons Level I Children's Surgery Verification Center, Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, Diagnostic Imaging Center of Excellence, 72-bed Level IV NICU, Level IV Epilepsy Center, and a 72-bed PICU.
