Description

Serves as the strategic and technical manager for one or more of the university's core research facilities. Provides strategic management and guidance to the university's core research facilities user community and ensures compliance with federal, state, and local agencies regulations and guidelines. Responsibilities include development of universal protocols, as well as unique guidelines for each core facility.
  1. Assesses core facility needs and current equipment availability at UH, developing both short-term and long-term strategic business plans and short-term tactical/operations plans.
  2. Works with executive leadership to develop strategies to complete the build out of the Advanced Manufacturing Facilities at the UH Technology Bridge, as well as planned new space. Focuses on ROI (Return on Investment) model for strategic decisions.
  3. Participates in renovation and construction activities related to new research space. Works with faculty to develop program and building specs and ensures that the facility meets stated user needs. Serves as a liaison between faculty, deans, and the divisions of Research, Administration & Finance, and Academic Affairs.
  4. Oversees user training programs; designing and developing curriculum as needed.
  5. Handles scheduled and emergency shutdowns of equipment and facilities, including the development of an automated user notification process.
  6. Pursues funding opportunities for core facilities and works with faculty to find approaches to incorporate existing research equipment into multi-user core facilities. Assists faculty in the preparation of multi-user institutional equipment or core facility proposals.
  7. Directs departmental operations and provides oversight of the development, operations, and maintenance of the core facilities. Selects and schedules appropriate personnel as needed.
  8. Develops and maintains an inventory database of core facility laboratory equipment. Maintains existing equipment and infrastructure, identifying and acquiring new equipment as needed. Identifies, develops, and enforces equipment operation protocols.
  9. Develops a process recipes database; identifies and resolves related issues.
  10. Develops user base community and performs outreach promotes the utilization of core facilities to leverage startup investments. Collaborates with Faculty Core Research Facilities Oversight Committee and implements the actions and decisions of the committee. Develops core facility policies in conjunction with executive leadership. Collaborates and coordinates strategic facilities issues with Plant Operations and the Research Facilities Task Force. Performs other job-related duties as required.

  • Directs and devises creative equipment solutions, and participates in the development, build-out, operations, and maintenance of new core research equipment and facilities.

Qualifications

Doctoral and 7 years of experience.

Requires singular knowledge of a specialized advanced professional discipline or the highest level of general business knowledge, normally acquired through attainment of a directly job-related terminal degree or equivalent formal training in a recognized field of specialization that is directly related to the type of work being performed. *Applicants must have a Ph.D. in relevant engineering or science discipline. *Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly job-related experience. *Prior industrial experience in core facilities is highly desirable.
