Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Provides leadership and direction by ensuring that quality, cost-effective, and compassionate patient and family-centered care is provided. Responsible for the daily operations, patient flow, and capacity management. S/he in collaboration with the Medical Director of Emergency Services, Senior Vice-President of Patient Care Services, other Vice Presidents, Directors, Department Managers, Caregivers and Medical Staff, translates the Hospital and Health System Strategic vision and plan in a clinical practice vision and plan for Emergency Services.

Essential Duties:

This job description is intended to cover the minimum essential duties assigned on a regular basis. Caregivers may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned by their leader. Leadership has the right to alter or modify the duties of the position.
  • Provides leadership and direction by ensuring that quality, cost-effective, and compassionate patient and family-centered care is provided. S/he in collaboration with the Medical Director of Emergency Services, Senior Vice-President of Patient Care Services, other Vice Presidents, Directors, Department Managers, Caregivers and Medical Staff, translates the Hospital and Health System Strategic vision and plan in a clinical practice vision and plan for Emergency Services. Represents Emergency Services with the Medical Director of Emergency Services to Senior Vice-President of Patient Care Services, Sparrow Administration and Medical Staff
  • Contributes to the development of Patient Care Services Strategic Plan.
  • Provides information and advises the Senior Vice-President of Patient Care Services regarding current and projected nursing trends, areas of deficiency, and significant activities in the nursing profession and applicable to Emergency Services.
  • Facilitates the development of a collaborative relationship between the medical and nursing staff.
  • Represents the Hospital and Health System in the community, educational institutions and professional nursing organizations.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with agencies outdide Sparrow that interact with and have business with Emergency Services.
  • Communicates shared vision.
  • Facilitates the development and implementation of strategic goals for Ermergency Services in collaboration with the Medical Director of Emergency Services and Sparrow leadership.
  • Creates an atmosphere that supports and encourages high performance, teamwork and continual improvement.
  • Identifies the need for revision of existing services and/or the development of new services in response to changing external environment.
  • Provides direction in the management of Emergency Services.
  • Maintains full compliance with all regulatory agencies by continually monitoring the nursing service operations and initiating change where appropriate.
  • In collaboration with the Medical Director of Emergency Services and Senior Vice-President of Patient Care Services, develops a nursing climate and culture, which is consistent in the mission and values of the organization and communicates the mission and vision throughout Emergency Services.
  • Promotes consistent, open, two-way communication.
  • Promotes nursing education and research efforts for the Emergency Services.
  • Selects, orients, mentors and evaluates Director, Department Managers, Assistant Department Managers and Nurse Educators within Emergency Services. Assists in the ongoing assessment and development of all direct reports through a formal performance appraisal. Provides support, counseling, advice and guidance in such areas as: nursing practice, caregiver development, performance evaluation, conflict resolution, department policies, change process, problem solving, and clinical service plan/business plan development. Develops mutually agreed-upon goals and objectives that correlate with the Hospital Strategic Plan.
  • Evaluates competency of the nursing staff and makes appropriate changes as needed; seeks to maintain high caregiver morale and a professional, healthful, positive atmosphere and environment in Emergency Services.
  • In conjunction with the Director and Department Managers, prepares annual budget for Emergency Services and monitors compliance to the budget.
  • Continually monitors quality and customer satisfaction within Emergency Services and initiates changes to ensure ongoing improvement in all areas.
  • Provides assistance to supervisory personnel in establishing clear department role statements and objectives, determining staffing needs and standards of productivity, establishing policies and procedures and appropriate nursing care delivery systems with corresponding position descriptions, and complying with state licensing boards within Emergency Services


Job Requirements

General Requirements

Current Michigan license to practice as a registered nurse • National Certification as a Nurse Leader / Executive - in hand or obtained within 6 months

Work Experience

Managerial: A minimum of 5 years of successful experience within the last (5) years in comparable setting, in a leadership position, demonstrating the managerial role: planning, staffing, communication and evaluating. • Clinical: A variety of nursing clinical experiences such as: patient care, quality improvement, infection control, education, research, etc. Knowledge of current trends, practices and issues related to Emergency and Services. • Physician Relations: demonstrates collaborative ability to work in partnership with physicians. Active participation in physician executive committees, task forces, meetings, recruitment efforts, that resulted in collaborative action and/or decision-making. • Master's in Nursing (Preferred) • National Certification in Emergency Nursing (Preferred)

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing
