The Division Director, Payer Strategies - Acute Care leads third-party payer contracting strategy and initiatives with payers. Develops and implements contracting strategies for all acute care facilities, professional providers and ancillaries.
  • Oversees and reviews all external medical provider contracts for the acute care division to ensure adequate reimbursement for medical services and appropriate development of division business opportunities.
  • Reviews and develops division contracting policies and coordinates division contract performance.
  • Directly participates in and assists the Vice President, Payer Strategies, with analysis, proposal, negotiation, communication and implementation related to third party payer contracting.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of managed care contracting and practices sufficient to maximize revenue generated from these sources. Knowledge of health care finance practices and methods.
  • Demonstrated managed care contract negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated inter-personal and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to collate and analyze multiple data points to inform negotiations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across various levels of the organization up to and including C-Suite (internally and externally).
  • Demonstrated skills in small and large group presentations.
Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred.

Minimum of 8-10 years experience.

Up to 10-15% travel.

Qualifications

  • Serves as a UHS resource for all negotiation, analysis, communication and implementation for third-party payer contracts. Negotiates and recommends the settlement of all UHS provider-payer contracts. Anticipates and participates in the identification of relevant business opportunities for UHS. This includes at least quarterly reviews with all leadership (CEO and CFO) for goal setting.
  • Serves as liaison for construction, review and conclusion of contract language for third party payer contracts. Responsible for the continuous improvement of the UHS contracting principles, contracting framework, and contract checklist/language.
  • Establishes exceptional communication between the payer, the facility and UHS leadership. Develops and negotiates complex contracts with third party payers to support contracting strategy and goals. Reduces risk to facilities.
  • Provides in depth professional and hospital financial data review, interpreting and reporting at various organizational levels. Attends meetings as necessary to present financial information and address questions or concerns. Evaluates contract performance versus expected financial and operational performance in conjunction with Revenue Cycle leadership and Financial Management leadership. Develops/Implements necessary contract changes as issues and/or new developments occur.
  • Properly utilizes UHS I.S. systems and works with the finance department to collate and analyze data that will inform negotiations and ensure rate setting is favorable for UHS.
  • Represents UHS to payers to encourage open communication and maintains relationships to the benefit of UHS and assigned facilities.
  • Assists regional negotiators in problem resolution with payers related to claims payment and denials by coordinating meetings and using UHS corporate resources to find solutions.
  • Reviews, interprets and analyzes profitability of third-party payers. Recommends rate improvements and efficiencies. Aids in implementing changes and identifying payer performance indicators.
  • Interacts with other GHS departments, physicians and management utilizing an approach that builds a team relationship. Works effectively with other principals of the Finance leadership team. Works in conjunction with other areas to insure coordinated activities with respect to all contracting needs. Assists in the resolution of operational problems with contracted payers.
  • Performs other duties as assigned/required.
