Job Duties

DMV is looking to hire a Sergeant in our Training and Professional Standards Unit, responsible for the Western Region. The Base Point of this position will be the Lynchburg Customer Service Center (CSC).

The Regional Training Sergeant is responsible for determining organizational performance and development needs and services for their assigned region; and for the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of training programs and/or initiatives for police officers and other law enforcement personnel. They are also responsible for ensuring compliance with policies and procedures, fostering a culture of ethical behavior and accountability within the agency, and periodically conducting preemployment background investigations. This position is crucial in ensuring that the Law Enforcement Division operates at the highest level of professionalism and is prepared to meet the challenges of duties effectively and ethically.

The incumbent will be indirectly responsible for the supervision of personnel during in-service training and directly responsible for the supervision of personnel during the academy and field training phases of employee on-boarding. In addition, they will be responsible for the management of numerous programs at the regional level that will have a direct impact on the success of the division's mission and goals.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience coordinating and managing in-service training at regional satellite facilities and other approved locations.
  • Experience a field training supervisor for newly certified officers and lateral officers.
  • Experience coordinating training schedules, managing classroom and field training logistics, and ensuring the availability of necessary resources and equipment for training events.
  • Experience maintaining accurate and comprehensive records of training activities, participant progress, and program evaluations.
  • Experience developing and updating training curriculum.
  • Experience conducting classroom and field training sessions on a wide range of topics, including but not limited to, criminal law, community policing, traffic enforcement, defensive tactics, firearms proficiency, and emergency response.
  • Use of evaluation tools a to assess the effectiveness of training programs and the competence of trainees.
  • Experience with instructor development to include identifying and mentoring potential instructors within the agency and providing them with the skills and knowledge to deliver effective training.
  • Experience conducting preemployment background investigations during the hiring process.
  • Experience conducting investigations of allegations of misconduct, including but not limited to, use of excessive force, abuse of authority, corruption, discrimination, and violation of policies and procedures.
  • Must be currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a law enforcement officer.
  • Must be currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services as a General Instructor and at least one specialty instructor certification (Firearms Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Emergency Vehicle Operations Instructor).
  • Must possess a VCIN operator status.
  • Must possess or be eligible to possess a Virginia Driver's License.
  • Must reside in or be willing to establish residence within 50 miles or 75-minute drive time of assigned Base Point.
