The Facilities Division of the Public Works Department is hosting a hiring event for Electricians, Building Maintenance Workers, and Building Equipment Operators, with same-day job offers available for eligible candidates. Candidates who successfully apply will be emailed on August 2, 2024, with a link to sign up for an in-person interview.

Electrician

Electricians perform skilled level electrician work in the maintenance, construction, installation, alteration/modification, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in accordance with standard practices of the electrical trade for primarily commercial and industrial applications. Assignments are received by sketches, blueprints, verbally, and through work orders.

The work performed by Electricians requires the use of earth-moving equipment, aerial equipment up to 120', and pneumatic equipment to facilitate electrical repairs. There will be occasions when this position requires project leadership of other electrical team members, including apprentices, to complete job tasks. This position also requires the use of desktop and mobile devices for data entry, communication, and time entry. Working irregular shifts, evenings, weekends, holidays, after-hours, and on-call or "standby" for emergency support and requests may be required. Standby is currently compensated at $2.50 per hour, with callout requests and responses being paid at time and a half normal hourly wage.

Building Maintenance Worker

Building Maintenance Workers perform work involving numerous trades and skills, such as rough carpentry, cabinet making, plumbing, routine electrical or welding work, roofing, painting, drywall finishing, concrete/masonry work, and locksmithing. Assignments also involve the maintenance, repair, alteration, and remodeling of buildings, offices, houses, and other facilities. Work is performed independently or in teams and could involve occasionally serving as a crew leader over other Building Maintenance Workers for specified projects.

Responsibilities include:
  • Daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair work on doors and traditional style locks throughout city facilities and buildings.
  • Determining appropriate work methods, tools, and materials used for most assignments.
Building Equipment Operator II

Building Equipment Operator II's oversee the preventative maintenance program and operation in the building automation systems for occupied space comfort. There are more difficult technical tasks involved in operating, maintaining, overhauling, and repairing a variety of air conditioning, heating, ventilation, refrigeration, and other mechanical equipment in one or more City of Phoenix buildings.

  • 2nd shift 1 P.M. - 11:30 P.M.
  • 3rd shift 11 P.M. - 09:30 A.M.
Available Schedules
  • 4/10s either
    • Sunday, Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday o r Wednesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday.
Shift differential pay is available for hours worked during nights and weekends.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

Knowledgeable of and/or skilled in:

Building Maintenance Worker
  • Installing, maintaining, and repairing door components which include locks, closures, door frames, and hinges.
  • Commercial, metal framing, and drywall finishing.
Building Equipment Operator II
  • Prioritize work assignments.
  • Operate equipment according to manuals, directions, specifications, or warning signals.
  • Interpret performance charts and control panels which reflect the efficiency of each piece of equipment in the system.
  • Work in the field supervising and directing Building Equipment Operators I, Building Maintenance Workers, and other maintenance support employees according to general or specific instructions received from a Building Equipment Supervisor.

SALARY

Electrician
  • Pay Range: $28.86 to $40.61 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $28.86 to $36.84 per hour.
Building Maintenance Worker
  • Pay Range: $23.74 to $38.68 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $23.74 to $30.31 per hour.
Building Equipment Operator II
  • Pay Range: $28.86 to $42.64 per hour.
  • Hiring Range: $28.86 to $36.84 per hour.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Electrician
  • Completion of a recognized four-year electrical apprenticeship program, or equivalent training.
  • OR three years of experience as a skilled electrician.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Building Maintenance Worker
  • Three years of skilled level experience in building maintenance and repair work, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades,
  • AND completion of an acceptable apprenticeship program;
  • OR Six years of trades experience, three of which are at the skilled level, with a high level of proficiency in at least two of the building trades.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Building Equipment Operator II
  • Two years of journey level experience in the operation, repair, and maintenance of large, modern refrigeration and heating systems.
  • Supplemented by training in modern refrigeration and air conditioning systems.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

Required of All Positions:
  • Working irregular hours, second shift, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.
  • In addition, some positions may require individuals to pass an Arizona Department of Transportation physical exam and possess the appropriate commercial driver's license (CDL).   • Commercial and/or industrial electrical practices.
  • Reading blueprints, schematics, and one lines.
  • Preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Lighting installation or controls, troubleshooting and repair.
  • Installing or working with S.E.S., transformer, or generator equipment.
  • Working with electrical installations underground.
  • Lift / Aerial equipment.
Building Maintenance Worker
  • Construction.
  • Residential or commercial painting.
  • Commercial tenant improvements and repairs.
  • Drywall repair, installation, tape, and texturing tools.
  • Acoustical ceiling installation and repair.
  • Residential or commercial plumbing.
  • Managing vendors or sub contractors.
Building Equipment Operator II
  • Residential and commercial installation, repair, and replacement.
  • Universal EPA certification.
  • Supervising and/or directing the work of equipment and/or maintenance employees.
  • Working with automated preventative maintenance programs.
  • Plant chiller maintenance and repair.
  • Welding/pipefitting.
  • Computer Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
Environmental conditions may include:
  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Moving heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more long distances up to 20 feet or more.
  • Walking for prolonged periods, climbing ladders or steps to reach objects, working at heights greater than 10 feet, and working with 480 volts.
