UGA Cooperative Extension was founded in 1914 to bring research-based agricultural information to the people of Georgia. County agents and specialists throughout the state share information on issues like water quality, profitability in agribusiness, family wellness, and life skills. County agents provide soil and water test kits and instruction, advice on safe pesticide use, publications, computer programs, and lessons in consumer skills to improve Georgians' quality of life. They are the local experts in food safety, proper eating habits, child safety, and parenting. UGA Extension coordinates 4-H, Georgia's largest youth program. Each year, almost 200,000 young Georgians participate in community projects, summer camps, and conferences on today's issues while having fun and learning to work together. The leadership skills and values they learn in 4-H last a lifetime. UGA Extension reaches more than 2.6 million Georgians through education programs each year. A Master's degree in Human/Youth Development, Sociology, Education, Agriculture, Family & Consumer Sciences, Recreation, or related area. A Bachelor's degree is acceptable for a Public Service Provisional appointment (see Additional Requirements for more information on this provisional appointment)

Position Summary

This County Extension Agent position is responsible for managing the 4-H program in Douglas County by providing educational programs for youth in 4-H club meetings, coordinating local activities, and preparing youth for projects and judging events. It serves as a UGA Public Service Faculty member and a member of the County Extension Staff. It is under the direction and leadership of the County Extension Coordinator and the Northwest District Extension Director.

This position requires frequent night meetings, some weekend work, and attendance at out-of-county meetings. A valid driver's license and access to a reliable private vehicle for official duty travel are required. Reimbursement for business travel will be provided. Transportation of others including 4-H Youth and Adult Clientele is also a common and necessary function of the job. 4-H competitions, overnight camps, and other events are conducted at district and state levels and necessitate travel and transport of participants.

Progression towards earning an advanced degree is expected while in a provisional faculty position.   • Provides leadership for Program Assistants, volunteers, and teen leaders in delivering 4-H and Youth programs.
  • Utilizes the expertise of and works closely with advisory groups, community leaders, public officials and representatives of intended audiences to analyze data, identify needs, and assist in developing educational programs.
  • Develops a plan of work that is equitable in meeting the needs of the county's varied socio-economic population.
  • Develops and conducts relevant interdisciplinary programs with other staff members based on critical issues.
  • Collaborates with other agencies and community groups to plan and implement programs.
  • Conducts promotional efforts to expand the public's view of extension programming.
  • Utilizes current research data and information on emerging issues in program development and teaching.
  • Demonstrates personal interest and involvement in the community by participating in and supporting civic/community activities/organizations and networking with community leaders.
  • Makes timely and effective use of the skills of other county staff members, district staff, specialists and other resource people in planning Extension programs.
  • Expresses and demonstrates an entrepreneurial spirit in obtaining extramural funding (i.e., grants, partnerships, endowments, etc.).
  • Submits accurate and timely required program reports measuring impact of efforts.

  • Implements county annual plan of work by using a variety of creative and effective techniques or teaching methods and resources so that clientele can make informed decisions and/or behavior changes.
  • Identifies, recruits, trains, involves and recognizes volunteers in planning, teaching and evaluating Extension programs.
  • Targets specific audiences - (e.g., low income, aging, youth at risk) for educational programs addressing critical issues identified in plan of work (POW).
  • Prepares and/or localizes mass media efforts.
  • Uses web and internet to increase program outreach.
  • Achieves and maintains skills in teaching, communicating and promoting Extension programs and demonstrates competence in delivery of up-to-date technical subject matter.
  • Follows through on commitments and/or planned projects, making relevant adjustments if necessary.
  • Uses the results of program evaluations and feedback in planning future programs and techniques used in implementing programs.
  • Maintains an educator's role in public policy education.

At least on an annual basis, the agent working within the specific position will review the position description with the CEC to determine its relevance.

Professional improvement may include professional education, formal course work, in-service trainings, involvement in professional organizations, and other methods of professional improvement that are relevant to the position.

  • Makes reports to appropriate publics, clientele and public officials through media, personal contacts and/or group meetings to provide information on progress of Extension programs. Coordinates reporting with other county staff members, when appropriate.

  • Attends and participates in training sessions/activities overnight and on weekends as directed by the DED and CEC.
  • Work for this job is a combination of office and fieldwork in nature. To some degree, physical activity (i.e., handling animals, demonstration materials and AV equipment, etc.) is required to conduct programs and move equipment and materials to and from program sites.
