GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Provides routine (journey-level) food service supervisory work in the Training Operations Division. Work is performed under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the initiative and independent judgment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Supervises and assists cooks to prepare, set up for and serve meals, between-meals, refreshments and to clean utensils and all parts of the kitchen, cafeteria, and applicable food storage areas.

2. Operate the cash register; closes out the register by balancing the money with cash register receipts and credit card deposits after food service each day.

3. Updates food service manager of daily product usage for both food items and cafeteria supplies.

4. Resolve and report to immediate supervisor any and all cafeteria operations' problems that occur during the shift.

5. May serve as a relief cook as necessary peak meal times or labor shortages.

6. May assist arranging for equipment maintenance and repairs.

7. Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.

8. Perform other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED.

Experience - Minimum of two (2) years' progressively responsible experience cooking and preparing large volume foods for cafeteria-style service in a state agency or institution, military facility or a large commercial food service establishment.

Licensure and/or Certification - If driving is required, must possess a valid driver license and automobile insurance.

Regulatory knowledge - Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State, and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures. Considerable knowledge of the requirements for sanitary conditions throughout the food preparation and serving processes. Considerable knowledge of the techniques and methods of preparing foods in large quantities and of the care and use of kitchen appliances, equipment and tools.

Food Service Skills - Skill in cooking and baking. Ability to plan and schedule cooking and baking tasks to assure completion of cooking processes of various foods at similar to assure serving of hot and properly textured foods at scheduled serving times.

Analytical skills - Must demonstrate an ability to examine data/information, discern variations/similarities, and be able identify trends, relationships and causal factors, as well as grasp issues, draw accurate conclusions, and solve problems. Ability to recognize and analyze problems common to large-volume cooking situations and to effectively resolve majority of problems independently.

Interpersonal skills - Must demonstrate an ability to exercise poise, tact, diplomacy and an ability to establish and maintain positive, working/professional relationships with internal/external customers.

Organizational skills - Must be organized, flexible, and able to prioritize in a multi-demand and constantly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to meet multiple and sometimes conflicting deadlines without sacrificing accuracy or timelines; ability to work independently; and to understand and effectively apply complex oral and written instructions and procedures.

Schedule - Availability for various shift assignments, after-hour and weekend work is required.

Confidentiality and Protected Information - Must be able to responsibly handle sensitive and confidential information and situations.

Safety - Must be able to work in a safe manner at all times, avoiding shortcuts that have potential adverse results/risks, and must be able to comply with safety standards and best practices.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in the same salary group and state title as their current position will be transferred with no salary change.

A DPS employee who is selected for a position in their current salary group with a new state title may receive an increase of no more than 3.4% over their current salary regardless of posted salary.

Salary is contingent upon qualifications and is subject to salary administration and budgetary restrictions.
