Position Information

TxDOT's Bridge Division - Design Section is looking to hire a - Drafting Technician - Transportation Engineer Specialist I, II, III, or IV based in Austin, TX. In the Bridge Division - Design Section, we oversee activities pertaining to the creation of in-house bridge, railing, and traffic structures design, and plan preparation; intelligent 3D bridge modeling; research implementation; bridge standards development; historic bridge preservation; bridge design policy; and shop drawing review. This individual will be drafting the structural details for bridges that will be used by Texans for many years to come.

Salary Plan/Grade

Transport Engineer Spec I - B18 ($42,521 - $61,000 yearly)

Transport Engineer Spec II - B19 ($45,244 - $65,000 yearly)

Transport Engineer Spec III - B20 ($48,158 - $70,000 yearly)

Transport Engineer Spec IV - B21 ($51,278 - $74,000 yearly)

Position Description

Transport Engineer Spec I:

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer or who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Transport Engineer Spec II:

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority for projects. Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transport Engineer Spec III:

Performs advanced and specialized drafting, calculations and design work; uses automated systems; learns specialized techniques; trains and reviews the work of others; others. Design activity is overseen by a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority for projects. [May serve as lead worker.] Employees at this level establish their own work plan and priorities to meet set objectives. Issues are rarely referred to the supervisor but are handled at the occurrence.

Transport Engineer Spec IV:

Provides highly skilled technical expertise and oversees multiple design and/or advanced building construction projects. Reports to a licensed professional engineer who has final approval authority for projects. Work requires contact with governmental agencies, consultants and construction firms. May serve as lead worker. Employees are virtually self-supervising and assume accountability for their work.

Essential Duties:

The essential duties for this job include:

Transport Engineer Spec I:

  • Performs advanced and specialized drafting and calculations in support of design activities;
  • Prepares quantity summaries
  • Reviews entire sets of plans for format, drafting and calculation errors and correlation of plans and specifications.
  • Reviews work done by others for drafting and calculation errors.
  • Uses additional automated design tools or specialized design procedures in areas including bridge/culvert detailing, and retaining walls.
  • Uses automated programs, interactive graphics.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.


Transport Engineer Spec II - Performs all of the above plus:

  • Trains less experienced technicians.


Transport Engineer Spec III and IV - Performs all of the above plus:

  • Develops and implements statewide detailing practices and conventions for use on project plans.
  • Receives project assignments, determines work requirements to complete project plans and coordinates scheduling to accommodate projects already underway.
  • Writes general notes, specifications and provisions.


Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School Grad or Equivalent in general high school studies.

Experience:

Transport Engineer Spec I:

  • 6 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent


Transport Engineer Spec II:

  • 7 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent


Transport Engineer Spec III:

  • 8 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent


Transport Engineer Spec IV:

  • 9 YEARS Drafting, design, plan preparation
  • Experience can be satisfied by full-time or prorated part-time equivalent


Licenses and Certifications:

  • Mandatory: Safety Impact Certificate

    Safety Impact certification is not required at the time of application. The Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire


Substitution

Related college education or relevant technical training may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.

Transport Engineer Spec III and IV - Performs all of the above plus:

  • Advanced and specialized drafting procedures
  • Higher mathematics
  • Design and plan preparation methods and requirements
  • Writing, reviewing and revising documents to include engineering notes, specifications, standards and procedures
  • Developing, interpreting, and implementing policies, procedures, and technical information.


Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Transport Engineer Spec I, II, III, and IV

  • Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions
  • Sedentary work: Lift up to 10 lbs at a time and occasionally carry files/small tools
  • Repetitive Motion-substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers
  • Close Visual Acuity-work includes data/figures; view a computer screen; extensive reading
