Job Summary:
The Child Development Lab (CDL) is a relationship-based program where teachers strive to build foundational trusting, caring and respectful relationships. The Early Childhood Assistant Teacher position works cooperatively and collaboratively supporting the classroom teacher, other CDL staff, parents, college students, and researchers to carry out the mission of the CDL program.

The Assistant Teacher is responsible for collaborating with the teacher to provide a safe, healthy, and nurturing environment for the children in the classroom and assists with ensuring all licensing and accreditation standards are met including a strong ability to supervise children by sight and sound at all times.

The Assistant Teacher positively guides children's behavior and supports and assists the teacher in meeting the social and emotional, cognitive, language, and physical needs and goals of the group as well as individual children within the group, including children with developmental delays or disabilities and/or children with challenging behaviors. The Assistant Teacher supports the teacher in supervising college students placed in the classroom, assists with modeling and training for student staff, and follows all WI Department of Children and Families group child care licensing regulations and all CDL policies and procedures.

This position requires the ability to sit on floor and get up and down with ease; run, jump and climb hills and step stools; reach overhead to retrieve items on shelves above shoulder level; to lift at least 35 pounds and carry this weight across a classroom; engage in vigorous outdoor and large motor play for at least 30 minutes; push/pull at least three children in a stroller, wagon and evacuation crib; walk up and down stairs; move/push classroom furniture as needed; perform physical tasks within a time frame commensurate with needs of fast-paced classroom. This position also requires active participate in outdoor activities with the children daily in all types of weather.

Some nights and weekends may be required for staff to attend professional development trainings and or other CDL community-wide events.
Responsibilities: Assists with curriculum preparation, classroom facilitation, and student monitoring to ensure safety and foster an environment of learning and development. Interacts regularly with parents.

• 25% Assists with the planning and facilitation of classroom programming and classroom coordination and organization for a early childhood education facility according to established curriculums
• 30% Maintains the safety and physical well-being of children in a designated classroom
• 15% Updates and organizes individualized and developmental educational plans for children
• 15% Assists with basic technical and administrative classroom support
• 10% Documents effective communication with internal and external stakeholders to relay pertinent information and provide updates of child activities per established guidelines and regulations
• 5% Assists classroom teachers with ensuring all Madison Metropolitan School District 4K requirements are completed as required.

Qualifications:
Required Qualifications:
- One or more years of experience assisting with managing child routines in a group or regulated childcare setting.
- Prior experience working with children 2-6 years of age.
- Knowledge and or experience with childcare licensing regulations.
- Candidate must be able to pass a criminal background check including fingerprinting.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience assisting with developmentally appropriate ECE curriculum planning and child assessment.
- Demonstrated skills in applying positive behavior guidance with young children.
- Ability to maintain patience, flexibility, and a calm demeanor when managing daily classroom routines.
- Commitment to ensuring an inclusive work environment and treating everyone with respect and dignity.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholder groups.
- Committed to learning and ability to stay up to date with current research based practices in working with young children of all abilities.
Work Schedule:
The CDL is open 7:30 AM-5:30 PM M-F, hours will vary within this time dependent upon staff needs of the program.

The starting annual base salary for this position is listed as $22.17 an hour but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications. Additional Information:
A yearly Criminal Background Check and Caregiver Background Check and fingerprinting will be performed. A TB test and health examination is required not more than 12 months prior to or 30 days after the first day of employment. A CPR certificate (including training in infant and child CPR, and training in AED) must be on file within 6 months of the first day of work. Abusive Head Trauma Prevention training and training in Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse are required and can be provided by CDL staff during orientation.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT LAB (CDL) is a unique early care and education program for young children 0- 5 years of age that also provides a teaching and research laboratory setting for university students, faculty and staff. The CDL is State-Licensed, City of Madison-accredited, and nationally accredited by NECPA and is located in a state-of-the-art teaching and research facility on the beautiful UW-Madison campus. The CDL is licensed for 75 children and offers year-round programming. The CDL's tripartite mission is: (1) to provide UW students with carefully supervised training opportunities associated with their course of study; (2) to provide a population and a setting in which UW faculty and students can conduct research on issues related to child development, early learning and family studies; and (3) to engage in outreach activities, such as hosting professionals and scholars from around the world, serving on committees, providing continuing education to other teachers in the community and helping to organize community service projects. The Child Development Lab has provided excellence in early childhood education, research, and teacher training for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers since its inception in 1926.
