Purpose Statement:
The job of "Assistant Cook" is done for the purpose/s of preparing and distributing food items
for consumption by students and school personnel and maintaining facilities in a sanitary
condition.

Essential Functions:

• Cleans utensils, equipment and the storage, food preparation and serving areas for the
purpose of maintaining sanitary conditions.
• Collects payments (e.g. cash or meal tickets) for the purpose of completing meal
transactions.
• Drives vehicles for the purpose of transporting foods, condiments and supplies to
designated sites.
• Estimates food preparation amounts for the purpose of meeting projected meal
requirements and minimizing waste.
• Inspects one or more items of food and/or supplies for the purpose of verifying quantity
and specifications of orders and/or complying with mandated health requirements.
• Loads food items, supplies and equipment for the purpose of processing site
requirements.
• Prepares documentation for the purpose of providing written support and/or conveying
information.
• Prepares food and beverage items for the purpose meeting mandated nutritional
requirements and projected meal requirements.
• Reconciles transactions for the purpose of balancing accounts and adhering to accounting
practices.
• Responds to inquiries of students, staff and the public for the purpose of providing
information and/or direction regarding the type and/or cost of meals.
• Serves one or more items of foods for the purpose of meeting mandated nutritional
requirements and/or requests of students and school personnel.
• Stocks food, condiments and supplies for the purpose of maintaining adequate quantities
and security of items.
• Transports money for the purpose of securing funds for daily transactions and/or
depositing funds.
• Unloads food items, supplies and equipment for the purpose of providing items for
appropriate work areas.

Other Functions:
  • Assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Employment contingent upon successful clearance of a Washington State Patrol, FBI fingerprint criminal history background check, and Sexual Misconduct background check.

Education/Experience:
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Prior job related experience in preparation of large quantities of food, serving and basic
kitchen activities.
Knowledge and Skills:
• Knowledge of delivery of materials, methods of materials handling, safe driving
practices.
• Skills to operate motor vehicle safely and responsibly, operate material handling
equipment and tools, perform basic math to calculate quantities of items, use calculator
and/or computer; use English in both written and verbal form.

Working Conditions:
Ability to walk for prolonged periods, understand and carry out oral and written instruction,
drive for extended periods, read maps and schedules, adhere to route schedules, maintain written
records.
Mental Demands: Requires concentration and attention to detail for repetitive tasks; may deal
with distraught or difficult individuals.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to
stand, talk or hear, and taste or smell. The employee frequently is required to walk; use hands to
finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Reaching, handling, fingering rolls of
coins, cash, visually aware while collecting funds and observing cafeteria.
Requires sitting, standing, bending, and reaching; dexterity and precision required in the
operation of a kitchen equipment. May require carrying up to 50 pounds or lifting up to 50
pounds.
Examples of lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling are sack of flour, case of soft drinks, trays, cart,
hand truck, balancing is wet, slippery floors, stooping is low rack, oven, reaching/
handling/fingering are dishes, spoons, food, cash, hearing normal conversation and other sounds,
visual acuity serving, preparing food.

May include: lifting/carrying-/pushing/pulling are boxes of food supplies, pallet jack, hand truck,
stooping/kneeling/crouching are lifting supplies, reaching/handling are supplies, materials for
schools, talking/hearing are sometimes over forklift noise, visual acuity/depth
perception/accommodation are driving vehicle, reading forms. Driving/delivery between sites.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or
humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic
chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock and risk of radiation. The noise
level in the work environment is usually loud.
Potential exposure to: cleaning solvents, boiling water, dishwater, oven cleaners, bleach,
cleaners, dusts (flour). Recommend protective clothing - devices Aprons, latex gloves,
protective shoes (no open toes, sandals, thongs, and slippers).
