Job Summary

This posting may be used to fill multiple vacancies.

The Tax Research Division studies Minnesota's tax structure and how proposed tax law changes effect revenue collections and statewide economy. The Economic Analyst leads and presents advanced research on state and local taxes in Minnesota, with special attention to Revenue Estimates and the biennial Tax Incidence Study. The Economic Analyst analyzes economic trends and applies evolving economic theory across the work of the division.

This position will have the flexibility to work a hybrid schedule or work in the office. The incumbent will be expected to work a portion of their time in the office and may have occasional evening and weekend work, especially when the legislature is in session. The incumbent may be asked to travel to attend conferences as part of a professional development plan.

Teleworking employees are required to live in Minnesota or in a state bordering Minnesota.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • Five (5) years of advanced professional experience in economic analysis, including designing detailed logic for, writing, and executing models and analyzing and explaining the model results.

*Doctorate degree may substitute for two years of experience; Master's degree may substitute for 18 months of experience; Bachelor's degree may substitute for one year of experience; Associate's degree may substitute for six months of experience.

Work experience must include:
  • Advanced training in micro and macro economics
  • Extensive experience presenting and promoting research
  • Experience performing analysis using R, SAS, STATA, eViews, or similar statistical analysis programs.
  • Proficiency in data analysis

Applicants who meet the above experience will be required to submit a work sample that demonstrate the following:
  • Ability to effectively display economic data with charts and graphs
  • Written communication skills
  • Strong critical thinking skills

Preferred Qualifications

• A master's degree in applied economics, economics, business, or a related field
• Graduate coursework in micro and macro economics
• Graduate coursework in public finance or taxation
• Knowledge of advanced statistical and econometric techniques
• Extensive knowledge of Minnesota's state tax structure
• Strong professional writing skills

Physical Requirements

Requires occasional moving of articles such as boxes, accounting records, laptop computer, and portable printer.
