Description

An Emergency Department (ED) LPN works alongside emergency room doctors and registered nurses as a first-line caregiver in the Emergency Department. The LPN performs routine processes that make up patient care in this setting. The LPN also helps to relay care information and observations back to doctors and Registered nurses. Under the direct supervision of an RN, the LPN carries out quality patient care from age's newborn to geriatric according to hospital policies and procedures, functioning within the limitation of job scope, and Nurse Practice Act, assuring a patient centered care approach. Assures all patient/family needs are met. Demonstrates knowledge of patient/staff safety measures. Provides for open communication within the unit, with patients, families, physician and other units.

Position Responsibilities

  • Receives direction and assignments from physicians and RN to help provide technical support to optimize and provide exceptional patient care within scope of care.
  • Responsible for reporting on the condition (or changes in condition) of patient/client to the appropriate supervisor and other staff members.
  • Coordinate and assist with care as directed to include: hourly rounding, maintain chart documentation and updating of communication board.
  • Responsible to provide bedside shift report at the beginning and end of each shift.
  • Cleans and stocks carts, rooms, and changes linen, assists with department inventory as required.
  • Assists with transport of patients to other departments.
  • Assist with resuscitation / CPR and emergency airway procedures.
  • Assist with obtaining and documentation of vital signs and placement of oxygen saturation, cardiac monitoring, and non-invasive blood pressure monitoring systems.
  • Assist with other technical functions such as: obtaining 12-lead EKGs, discontinuation of peripheral IV and heparin/saline locks, maintenance and care of specimens for laboratory analysis, and Point of Care Testing.
  • Assist with wound care, nasogastric tubes, start and discontinue Foley catheters on adult patients.
  • Decontaminates all equipment, instruments, and supplies.
  • Assists with positioning patients, application of orthopedic splints and dressings.
  • Maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Carries out patient care according to hospital policies and procedures functioning within the limitations of the Colorado Nurse Practice Act.
  • Accountable for the safe administration of medications.
  • Administer IV Fluids and PO Medications for adult patients under the order of a physician and direction of an RN.
  • May discharge lower acuity patients under the supervision/direction of an RN (all applicable teaching of instructions, medications and d/c assessments must be documented accurately in the patient record).
  • May implement specified procedures within their scope of practice under the direction and supervision of an RN.
  • May perform and document ongoing assessment (excluding triage or initial assessments) under the supervision/direction of an RN.


Requirements

PRN or "as needed" employees provide a crucial role within the organization, giving departments more flexibility to operate and ensuring that Delta Health provides superior services to our patients.

  • PRN minimum requirement: 2 shifts per month, 1 holiday per year
  • Completion of LPN program and licensure required within 60 days.
  • Must be IV Certified upon hire.
  • Minimum of one year's relevant experience preferred.
  • BLS certification required upon hire.
