About this job:

Under the supervision and direction of the school administration, teaches a solid foundation for English Language Acquisition.The ELA Substitute Instructor will be added to a roster of individuals available to fill in for instructors at the main campus (1860 Lincoln St), offsite locations (1666 Elmira St, 1370 Xenia St), and/or online classes using Google Meet. The ELA Substitute Instructor will teach classes in the morning, evening, or Saturdays depending on individual availability and preference. The ELA Substitute Instructor will be called to cover classes within our refugee English program (CRESL) or our tuition based community program (PACE). When absences are planned, substitute instructors will have ample notice as well as prepared lesson plans for classes. When absences are unplanned, substitutes may be called with short notice and little to no prepared plan.



We are seeking an experienced adult English language teacher to fill daytime, low level refugee English classes Monday to Thursday at our downtown and 1666 Elmira St Locations. We are also seeking someone who can take evening classes or can substitute teach daytime or evening in person.

What You'll Do:
  • Teaches assigned courses to adults and postsecondary education option students (PSEO) ages 17 and older aligned with standards and requirements outlined in the individual course syllabi and program approval.
  • Writes unit lesson plans, daily lesson plans and various written and performance assessments, as directed.
  • Maintains program compliance with program approval.
  • Maintains appropriate inventory for all program equipment materials and supplies.
  • Maintains and accurately reports all student grades using appropriate software systems used by the school; maintains all student records, takes daily attendance, and performs other related administrative tasks.
  • Attends and participates in faculty, departmental, advisory committee and other professional meetings; participates in professional development activities.
  • Be available to teach various sections of leveled English classes in either the morning or evening
  • Leave detailed notes/follow-up for the classroom teacher
  • Follow a prepared teacher plan (where applicable).
  • Prepare materials (where applicable).
  • Attend departmental meetings/training as needed.
  • Track, record and submit student attendance and progress.
  • Check email, Google calendar, and other important working documents regularly.
  • Other duties as assigned.


What You'll Need:
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor's Degree or relevant work experience preferred.
  • Five (5) years experience in a related occupation within the preceding 10 years.
  • Broad knowledge of techniques and practices used in English Language Acquisition.
  • For CTE Roles: Must possess appropriate industry certification and licensure and must possess or have the ability to acquire a Colorado Credential for Career and Technical Education; For ESL roles: TEFL/TESOL/CELTA.
  • Adult Education and Vocational Certificates (e.g., ABEA) preferred.
  • Proficiency with Google Workspace.
  • Effective time management and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Flexible, creative, and strong conflict resolution skills.
  • Ability to coordinate instructional activities and work with staff and students.
  • The ability to take responsibility for one's own performance and perform under stress
  • Works collaboratively with others on a team.
  • Aptitude for variety and changing expectations in a fast-paced environment.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends; may be called on short notice.
  • A basic understanding of the cultural contexts of the various countries from which our students come.
  • A basic understanding of the refugee resettlement and asylum seeking process is preferred.
  • A working knowledge of and comfortability with various learning management systems (LMS) and online platforms.
  • Ability to problem solve and/or troubleshoot issues that may arise during in-person and virtual classes.
  • Ability to create community within in person and virtual classes.
  • Ability to welcome all students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to meet students where they are.
  • Ability to be flexible and adapt to unforeseen and/or stressful situations.
  • Ability to work independently without constant supervision.
  • Be culturally sensitive and open-minded.
