Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) Intern

This position exists to help create a safe work environment and promote a culture of safety excellence in a manufacturing setting which includes fabrication and assembly of aluminum fishing boats. The position assists in all components of the Environment, Health and Safety Programs that are required by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and various internal and external policies, requirements, and best practices.

This position has the flexibility to fit in with the candidates interests and experience (Environment, Safety, Occupational Health, Training, etc).

YOU WILL HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO:

  • Assist in implementing the overall strategy for employee health and safety that includes methods for injury and workplace illness prevention.
  • Conduct risk assessments of job tasks and the use of machines and equipment in the workplace.
  • Use risk assessments to prioritize and plan risk mitigation strategies including modification to workstations, equipment design, material handling and flow, and adjustments to process and procedures.
  • Participate in the investigation process ensuring that all incidents are investigated for root cause and adequate protective measures are implemented according to investigation.
  • Assist in and lead investigations that have potential for high severity or high frequency injuries.
  • Assist in the design of training materials including presentations, assessments and supplemental learning materials focusing on risk explanation and methods for worker protection.
  • Audit written programs as applicable that outline roles and responsibilities at all levels of the organization for safety sensitive operations or as required by Federal or local laws such as Forklift Operation, Overhead Hoist Use, Lock Out/Tag Out, Hazardous Chemical Storage and Use, Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plans, etc.
  • Plan, implement and monitor key performance indicators (KPI) that focus on compliance, injury prevention and continuous improvement which result in injury and illness trend declines. Assist in conducting or ensuring industrial hygiene (IH) monitoring is conducted and analyzed for air quality and noise.
  • Investigate sources of contamination or noise where appropriate and implement strategies for improvement based on the hierarchy of controls.
  • Assist in creating emergency response plans and teams using appropriate documents, training, and drills for all emergency response activities necessary for the site including fire, severe weather, chemical spill or violent incidents.
  • Participate in the facility safety committee ensuring that employees have a voice and all necessary follow-up activities are planned and executed with as much employee involvement as possible.

YOU’LL THRIVE IN THIS ROLE IF YOU HAVE THE FOLLOWING SKILLS, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

REQUIRED:
  • Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in environmental health and safety, engineering or related field.
  • Must possess the skills and ability to conduct incident investigations that find root cause.
  • Familiar with and use various investigative methods such as 5 Why or Fishbone Diagrams.
  • Ability to use tools while conducting risk assessments such as dynamometers, force gauges, dosimeters, and computer software.
  • Ability to read and understand technical equipment manuals.
  • Knowledge to design training using adult learning and training techniques.
  • Ability to break down complicated information so that it is easily understood by all learners.
  • Exhibits interest and care for the learning and understanding of employees at all levels of the organization; Considers things from multiple perspectives.
  • Ability to clearly communicate the results of the investigation and the planned steps for mitigation to all levels of the organization.
  • Capable of designing effective training programs that ensure worker understanding of risks and the steps to take to ensure that risk is mitigated through behavior modification or process compliance.
  • Ability to spend considerable time in an office setting as well as a manufacturing setting. Manufacturing environment includes exposure to noise, heat, machines, and walking/standing on concrete floors. May spend time outdoors in adverse weather conditions

PREFERRED:
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations associated with employee health and safety such as OSHA standards.
