A Snapshot of Your Day
The EHS Specialist is responsible for ensuring environmental, health and safety compliance within the workplace. They develop policies, procedures, and programs to ensure the safety of employees and the protection of the environment. They also maintain records, prepare reports, and provide training to employees.
How You'll Make an Impact
Position will be based in Winston Salem, NC. The ideal candidate for the position will have a degree, certification, or significant experience in safety management at a fixed site. The primary function of this position will be to support EHS and Risk Management activities for Winston Service Center. This will include safety program management, property risk management, and environmental permitting and reporting. This position requires an understanding of OSHA, Worker's Compensation, EPA, NFPA, FM Global, OSHA and DOT requirements and how these regulations impact our business. Previous safety experience is required.
  • Develop, implement, and manage safety and environmental programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Conduct safety and environmental audits to identify areas for improvement and develop plans to address deficiencies.
  • Work with supervisors and employees to identify and eliminate hazards in the workplace.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents to determine root cause and develop plans to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide safety and environmental training to employees to ensure proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials, and to ensure compliance with safety regulations and policies.
  • Prepare and submit reports to regulatory agencies to ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
  • Maintain records and documentation related to safety and environmental compliance.
  • Develop emergency response plans and procedures and conduct drills to ensure readiness.
What You Bring
BS/BA in Chemistry, Safety or Environmental Management or related discipline, or advanced degree, where required, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Certification may be required in some areas.

Demonstrates and applies extensive knowledge of field of specialization to the successful completion of complex assignments. Demonstrates advanced knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures of particular area of specialization. Demonstrates significant knowledge of organization's business practices and issues faced and contributes to problem resolution of those issues. Typically 8-10 years of successful experience in related field and successful demonstration of Key Responsibilities and Knowledge as presented above. Advanced degree MAY be substituted for experience, where applicable. Experience with RCRA, EPA, OSHA and DOT regulatory compliance, advanced incident investigation training.
  • Demonstrates and applies broad knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures for managed work group(s) and how it supports related operations.
  • Demonstrates a good understanding and application of supervisory approaches for work direction, motivation, performance management, and disciplinary action.
  • Requires strong problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Must have strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Requires a high level of proficiency with business writing skills.
  • Requires strict confidentiality in dealing with sensitive, private information, and possesses high professional ethics, dependability, good judgement, and ability to take decisive action.
  • Requires effective public relations and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently with some supervision available to address non-routine questions.
  • Ability to willingly participate in a team environment to achieve departmental and organizational goals and objectives.
  • Ability to work with established deadlines and achieve goals/outcomes.
  • Flexibility to work outside of standard business hours to meet business needs and travel to company events.
Physical demands
Occasionally required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to fingers, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl; talk and hear. Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Requires frequent computer and phone work.

Generally, position requires work in both an office setting and manufacturing environment. Work frequently requires communication after standard work hours or extended work hours, including weekends and/or evenings. Manufacturing area includes mechanical equipment, machines, moving forklifts and/or overhead cranes/lifting equipment.
