Electrical Test Engineer, High Voltage Battery

Palo Alto, California

Employer: Tesla Motors
Industry: Autopilot
Salary: $80000 - $300000 per year
Job type: Full-Time

The Role
We are looking to hire entry and early-career Test Engineers for our Hardware Testing team. As an HV battery test engineer, you will work with a passionate and multi-disciplinary group of engineers while learning how to build and use hardware, firmware, and software solutions to validate Tesla vehicle battery products to rigorous internal and automotive-industry standards. This role influences the design of the product through reliability risk identification and testing starting at early concept phases, going through product development and launch, and continuing post launch. A significant amount of the work will be hands-on, in the lab pushing prototypes to their limits and investigating those limitations. We are interested in diverse candidates with relevant experience, but we will prioritize curious and driven engineers with strong problem solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Responsibilities
  • Execute reliability testing that simulates realistic, accelerated lifetime, and environmental conditions on the battery pack and electrical, mechanical, and thermal sub-systems
  • Design, build, and instrument setups for battery system and component testing, including test fixtures, harnesses, and test PCBAs
  • Develop and maintain automation-focused test software to streamline execution, data collection and analysis
  • Investigate test and field failures to drive product development and test improvement
  • Work with design engineers, reliability scientists, material scientists, quality, and service to identify failure modes and generate design validation and reliability test plans
  • Identify and execute experiments targeting new technologies and critical risks to benefit vehicle products
  • Analyze, document, and present test results to cross-functional teams and leadership
  • Collaborate with test technicians to achieve test objectives

Requirements
  • Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with analog and digital circuits and familiarity with basic PCB design and circuit simulation
  • Hands-on experience with electrical test equipment (e.g., multimeters, DAQs, oscilloscopes, power supplies, and function generators), instrumentation, and measurement techniques
  • Experience with an object-oriented coding language and scripting (C++, Python, MATLAB, etc.)
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents such as datasheets, schematics, drawings, and specifications
  • Basic experience with hand tools and power tools
  • An appetite for technical problem solving and hands on work
Preferred:
  • Familiarity with high voltage systems and safe working practices
  • Proficiency in Python programming for test automation, data analysis, and equipment control
  • Formal or informal experience with one or more of the following:
  • Automotive components or systems, or vehicles in general
  • Physical testing and analysis of electrical, thermal, or mechanical systems
  • Any form of automation (manufacturing, robotics, testing, personal hobbies, etc.)
  • Interdisciplinary project team (e.g., FSAE or other project)
  • Working understanding and experience of 1 or more: battery systems, digital systems, power electronics, analog and digital circuits, or motor drives
  • Basic understanding or experience with 1 or more: Solid mechanics, fluid dynamics, heat transfer, FEA, 3D CAD software, physics of failure, fatigue analysis
  • Experience creating and executing design validation plans and test methods to validate performance requirements
  • Experience leading, and driving technical projects to completion, especially when multiple teams' input and buyoff are required
  • Comfort with balancing competing priorities and timelines and aligning those prioritizations with cross-functional team
