The primary purpose of the Physical Plant is to maintain all the University’s physical assets. This is achieved by repairs as needed and by a proactive plan of inspection and testing of all major equipment.

The Access Management Technicians provide technological support to improve business operations and service to students, faculty and staff. The unit offers consulting services; applications development and maintenance services; RFP services; vendor package evaluation services; and data integration/ data conversion services. The various business units in the division use systems operating on varied platforms; the focus being web-based or web-enabled systems. These systems often have interfaces to major administrative systems of the university or the state.

Location of Workplace Main UNCW Campus Brief Summary of Work for this Position
The Electronics Specialist will provide enterprise-wide hardware and technical support for Lenel OnGuard Electronic Access Control and Genetec Video Management System.

This position will be responsible for the following duties:
  • Coordinate with Project Management and Contractors for the construction of new facilities and the retrofit of existing facilities for card access and security camera installations to secure campus buildings and structures
  • Perform or oversee installations
  • Identify issues with existing access control and security camera equipment, troubleshoot and repair as required
  • Develop innovative solutions to improve the operations and reliability of systems and equipment
  • Responsible for keeping work orders and other documentation up to date and accurate
  • Work closely with UNCW Physical Security Lock Shop to assist in the maintenance and repair of campus standard and electrified door hardware, key and core issues and automatic door operators




This position has been designated as mandatory personnel for the University and may be required to report to work during adverse weather conditions, even though the University may be operating on an alternate schedule.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate’s degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred education, professional skills and experience
  • Knowledge of computers, equipment and peripherals as well as a basic understanding of network and IP protocol
  • Demonstrate an aptitude for learning and using Windows and Apple based software
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with computer support representatives, telecommunications, Physical Plant, Facilities and Project Management personnel as well as contractors and vendors
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instruction and work with minimal supervision
  • Experience with electronic systems and researching, ordering, and tracking associated parts and equipment
