Position Description

Title: LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST

Reports to: Principal(s)

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Develops and implements library media program which is applicable and related to desired educational goals and follows best practices outlined in the Alabama School Library Media Handbook for the 21 st century learner.
  2. Promotes the success of all students by facilitating the use and integration of technology, telecommunications, and information systems to enrich the curriculum and enhance learning.
  3. Develops library media center schedule that gives appropriate access to students and teachers.
  4. Collaborates with other schools and local libraries to supplement and enhance the school library program.
  5. Maximizes efficient use of available funds and provide faculty and students with the best possible materials.
  6. Prepares and administers library budget using standard accounting procedures.
  7. Supervises and promotes library activities which facilitate and enhance learning.
  8. Initiates contact with faculty and students in promoting and providing library media center services, resources and guidance.
  9. Participates in and works with other school personnel in the selection of books, technology, and other library materials which provide the student with the best learning opportunities.
  10. Collaborates with all teachers to support curriculum content, learning outcomes, student information needs, and information resources.
  11. Participates in professional growth and development activities including staff meetings and in-service and staff development activities as required or assigned.
  12. Teaches students to use critical thinking and problem solving skills for information literacy.
  13. Performs the technical responsibilities required to provide exemplary library service as part of an effective and successful educational facility.
  14. Provides input and assistance to other school personnel by actively participating in departmental, faculty, curriculum and special meetings.
  15. Has knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment needed by different departments in the school settings for effective teaching and learning.
  16. Teaches strategies for locating, accessing and evaluating information by integrating both electronic and printed resources.
  17. Ability to apply knowledge of current research, technology and theory to library facility.
  18. Ability to move around the room in order to monitor and assist students.
  19. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers.
  20. Skilled and effective in oral and written communication.
  21. Knowledge and skill in the operation of computers and computer programs.
  22. Ensure teachers are informed about the Family Education Rights and Privacy Acts (FERPA), the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment (PPRA), and the Sylacauga City Schools District's Student and Teacher Acceptable Use Practices (AUP) regarding classroom and student website development and maintenance.

  1. Coordinate website and school calendar maintenance with system webmaster.
  2. Attend district technology meetings.
  3. Able to lift thirty (30) pounds.
  4. Show politeness and good manners in dealing with others.
  5. Technology Inventory (school-wide: ensure all classrooms have working technology for the start of school)
  6. Process new textbooks/materials and assist with Inventory (all ELA and Math textbooks/kit materials are entered in the library circulation program. The materials are organized and checked out to the teachers before school begins)
  7. Chromebooks (Chrome updates, repair damaged devices, organize in carts for classroom use and inventory process) Chromebooks need to be ready for student use on the first day of school
  8. Process new library materials (books and materials ordered throughout the school year must be processed. This is a timely task and is usually completed during summer break. Students and teachers request the new material as soon as school begins.)


QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A master's degree in Education from an accredited college or university.
  • A valid teacher's certificate endorsed as Library Media Specialist.
  • Demonstrates expectations in 21 st century library media skills.
