The Emergency Medical Technician will be responsible for driving an emergency vehicle to the scene, assessing the patient as directed by the EMT-Paramedic on the scene, administering treatments, assisting the EMT-Paramedic, monitoring the patient, relating history and patient assessment to the Emergency Department personnel and transporting the patient to a facility. Reports to the Nurse Manager and or EMS Coordinator and is under the direction of the charge nurse, registered nurse and supervisory personnel. Performs duties and responsibilities in a quality manner adhering to all hospital policies and procedures. Attends to patients of all ages and genders.

Exceptional Skills and Qualifications

Applicants for this position should be able to collaborate with others in a team setting, have excellent communication skills, and a positive attitude toward problem-solving.
  • High School Diploma or GED: High School Diploma or GED + 6 months certification classes (Required)
  • 6-12 months with an ambulance service (Preferred)
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Certifications/Licensures required
  • Drives the ambulance in a safe manner in accordance with Indiana law relating to emergency vehicles. Minimal difficulties with area mapping systems
  • Operates ambulance and hospital radio equipment according to hospital policies and procedures
  • Completes initial and ongoing patient assessment and quickly takes appropriate action when significant changes are recognized
  • Gathers all pertinent information related to each specific patient and relates this information to the Emergency Department via the cellular telephone/radio system and the written patient report
  • Administers basic life support treatment according to accepted standards. These skills include but are not limited to non-visualized airways and IV maintenance. Assesses and treats all patients with respect to age specific issues
  • Assists paramedic when on emergency unit with all aspects of advanced life support care while adhering to written standing orders and protocols. Anticipates needs of the paramedic
  • Cleans and restocks ambulance and garage area as needed or required
  • Maintains visibility in the Emergency Department and offers unsolicited assistance to the emergency physician or RN when not performing ambulance duties
  • Thinks independently to insure that all aspects of daily job assignments are carried out without direct supervisory involvement
  • Assists in orientation of EMT's, Paramedics, EMT & Paramedic students and other personnel
  • Attends unit in-service and educational programs including audit & review as assigned
  • Maintains current certification records on all required skill levels
  • Performs phlebotomy per Community Howard Regional Health Policies and Procedures
  • Maintains the privacy and security of protected health information (PHI), the confidentiality of all information, and conducts all aspects of patient care charting, billing, and all operations within the system in a professional and ethical manner in accordance with Federal, State, and CHRH rules and regulations
