ABOUT THIS POSITION

The City of Phoenix Street Transportation Department is excited to announce three paid internship positions available. These opportunities are tailored for college students passionate about a career in civil engineering, traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or transportation planning, especially within the public sector.

The Engineer Interns will gain valuable experience by holding a position in the Street Transportation Department. One intern will be assigned to each of the following Department Divisions: Traffic Services, Design and Construction Management, and Street Maintenance. Below is a general list of work activities as part of projects that you could work on as part of the internship. Interns are required to commit to a working schedule of 15 - 20 hours per week during school, more hours are available during summer months or as available according to school schedule. This position is planned for a term of one year or summer, depending on the location of the college.

Responsibilities include:
  • Perform analysis of data.
  • Field Inspection and/or Material Testing.
  • Create and give presentations.
  • Create text and spreadsheet documents.
  • Manage projects, studies, and special assignments.
  • Review studies such as traffic studies, mobility studies, and project assessments.
  • Work with a team of professionals in reviewing civil engineering plans and specifications for a multitude of transportation projects.

  • Ability to be self-motivated with attention to detail.
  • Ability to perform independent research on the internet.
  • Ability to work for large portions of the day on tasks unsupervised.
  • Ability to be team-oriented with a strong capability to work independently.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills in the English language.

SALARY

This is an hourly part-time position and the pay is $19.07 per hour.

BENEFITS

Part-time employees are eligible for earned paid sick time, city training, and free or discounted bus and light rail fares.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be currently enrolled in a related degree program with a minimum of 60 college credits completed by the date of hire, or have a Bachelor's degree in a related field to civil engineering, traffic engineering, transportation engineering, or transportation planning.
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
  • CAD and GIS skills desirable.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working as part of a work group.
  • Experience working on projects.
