Job Summary:

Generally responsible for supervision and technical direction over a team of process engineers when functioning as a Lead Power Process Engineer on boiler, chemical recovery boiler, and power or steam generation related projects. As the lead engineer, responsibilities include total delivery of the process engineering deliverables on time, within budget, and meeting quality expectations. Duties may include performing advanced engineering work and serving as a technical specialist for complex engineering assignments. Work at this level requires extensive progressive experience in boiler systems design and operation and must be performed under minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities and Duties:

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:
  • Promoting the culture of working safely and applying safety related concepts into process design.
  • Depending on the project requirements, function as a lead power process engineer on large capital projects, as well as, function as a process engineer on smaller capital projects.
  • As Lead Power Process Engineer, plan, organize, and oversee the work of the process engineering team with responsibility for quality and accuracy as well as performance budget and schedule.
  • Understand the project scope and deliverables. Initiate timely project change notices when deviations are made from project scope that affect the cost of the work, deliverable and/or schedule.
  • Establish the design criteria for the project.
  • Oversee PFD and P&ID development, heat and material balances, hydraulic calculations, equipment specifications, and other process engineering tasks.
  • Review and approve all process engineering deliverables.
  • Assist in the development of bid packages for procurement of equipment and evaluate bids for compliance to the project specifications.
  • Review and check vendor information and reconcile verses the process design documents.
  • Coordinate with design leaders from other disciplines to ensure inter-disciplinary alignment of the design effort.
  • Review discipline design information and design drawings for process engineering input and participate in inter-discipline design reviews.
  • Develop preliminary designs suitable for the level of estimate being prepared as part of a capital project development study.
  • Develop value engineering solutions to process design to provide the client with the most cost effective engineering solution
  • Maintain familiarity with and utilize industry codes, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
  • Check calculations, reports, and studies made by other engineers to ensure accuracy, as well as conformance to codes, specifications, design criteria and good engineering practices.
  • Support efforts to develop process engineering standards, specifications, guidelines, and procedures.
  • Participate in business development activities as required, including pre-bid meetings, client presentations, scope review meetings, and proposal development.
  • Travel as required for client presentations and project related tasks.
  • Actively participates in the mentoring of less experienced process engineers.

  • Job Requirements

    Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
    • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. Masters degree would be a plus.
    • Minimum of 20 years of experience with power boilers, chemical recovery boilers, power generation, steam turbines, combustion turbines; including at least 10 years in a technical or operations capacity with an operating company.
    • Extensive knowledge of utility power boilers, chemical recovery boilers, steam turbines, combustion turbines, and heat recovery systems, fuels and fuel delivery systems, BFW systems, combustion air systems, and environmental systems and equipment
    • Extensive knowledge of boiler codes, standards, and regulations.
    • Experience in PFD and P&ID development, heat and material balances, and equipment specifications.
    • Must have at least 10 years of pulp and paper experience.
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
    • Willing to travel as required for pre-bid meetings, client presentations or other project specific requirements.
    • Professional Engineering registration is preferred.
