GENERAL DESCRIPTION / PURPOSE:

The Engineering Manager, Powertrain Systems provides leadership in the long-term development and engineering support of powertrain systems integrated into Loram's suite of On Track Machines used to service the global Railway Maintenance market. This role is responsible for organizing, developing, and leading all aspects of powertrain systems. The scope of powertrain systems includes power generation - diesel-electric gensets, catenary/OLE systems, fuel cell, and battery drive systems. This position focuses on the structuring and operation of a group of engineers and designers to ensure they function as an efficient and cohesive unit; the conceptualizing and day-to-day management of simultaneous projects; delivering quality designs to agreed specifications within time and budget constraints.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Functional & Technical Skills
  • Engage with product development customers to establish short/long-term vision for systems. Develop and manage technical specifications for assigned product lines.
  • Provide technical evaluation of supplier offerings, monitor current developments and industry trends as they relate to assigned systems, and provide recommendations for Loram product enhancements and upgrades.
  • Design and develop complex mechanical systems, equipment, and products for industrial machinery.

Compliance
  • Provide technical guidance, oversight, and mentoring to internal and external engineering resources in technical knowledge, application, and processes.
  • Promote consistency, quality, and safety within and across systems and integration into product lines.
  • Ensure conformance to rules, regulations, and performance specifications are applied throughout the development program and product/system life cycle.

Operational Excellence
  • Assist in design for manufacture assessments of proposed designs, sourcing strategies, project management, and in identification of cost reduction opportunities.
  • Identify, plan, and support research and/or development work, including developing specifications, justifications, budget estimates, concept drawings, bill of materials (BOM) structure, and other necessary documents.
  • Promote environment of continuous improvement of engineering processes and documentation to increase throughput, design efficiencies, and product quality.
  • Ensure the group achieves objectives and project completion within specified budget and time frame.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

Experience:
  • 4+ years of experience engineering power generation or traction systems including mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and control subsystems.
  • 8+ years design experience leading technical design teams or department including budget and personnel performance management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Working knowledge of business software including MS Office suite.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design software including CAD software.
  • Ability to collaborate with others to clarify requirements and develop solutions.
  • Ability to interpret analysis data including vibration and Finite Element Analysis

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Master of Science in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering

Experience:
  • 4+ years of experience leading cross-functional teams or Project Management experience
  • 8+ years of experience in any of the following:
    • Railroads, transportation, agricultural, or heavy construction equipment design.
    • Power systems, engineering integration of power units and generator sets (up to 2,000 Hp/1.3MW).
    • Complex/large scale machine layout and kinematic design.
    • Large scale structural design and analysis.

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Professional Engineer License (PE)
  • Obtain and maintain railroad safety training and credentials.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Experience with emerging technologies supporting global decarbonization efforts in the offroad sector.
  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor solid modeling software and Vault PDM software.
  • Ability to utilize ERP software for tracking projects and product costs. Preferably exposure to IFS.
  • Experience using ANSYS FEA software.
  • Knowledge of Fluid and Heat Transfer modeling software
