Working alongside the New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) General Office (GO) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) personnel, the North Region Division (NRD) advances NMDOT projects through both internal design efforts and consultant oversight. The North Region Division also provides oversight on local agency projects that use federal funding for design and construction activities. The North Region Division is based out of the Santa Fe NMDOT General Office and is comprised of professional engineers, technicians, and administrative support staff.

Why does the job exist?

This position is to assist in the Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of production plans and packages. Incumbent will assist in preparing design drawings by incorporating red lines on an as needed basis, perform calculations to check project design elements, utilizing computer drafting software applications, and other tasks as identified by your supervisor and/or as needed in the Region.

How does it get done?

This job requires completing duties associated with an entry level drafter for highway design projects utilizing AutoCAD Civil 3D. Reviewing Construction Plan sets at various stages of development assisting with Quality Control checks to get familiar with the features of an NMDOT design and construction plan set. Applicants must have a basic understanding of AutoCAD Civil 3D as it applies to highway design. Individuals will develop a familiarity with current Cadd standards and templates as established by the NMDOT, with guidance provided by the supervisor and senior level Engineer Technicians. Begin to develop a knowledge and understanding of current roadway design standards as established by the NMDOT, FHWA, and other agencies with guidance provided by the supervisor and senior level Engineer Technicians. Tasks associated with this position include:
Addressing basic redlines on plans provided by the PDE and senior level Engineer Technicians.
Assists the design units as needed to meet goals and objectives.
Be responsive to coaching and direction from PDE's and senior level Engineer Technicians.
Shows willingness to engage in outside training opportunities when possible
Shows ability to learn current design guidelines and methods established by the NMDOT, FHWA, and other relative agencies.
Develops an understanding of NMDOT Cadd standards and templates
Learns NMDOT and FHWA process regarding the development of highway construction plans.
Listens effectively and clarifies information as needed.
Identifies and analyzes problems; weighs relevance and accuracy of information; generates and evaluates alternative solutions; makes recommendations.
Coordinates design efforts with other groups within the department.

General Public, New Mexico Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, North Region Design, District 4, and District 5.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have experience in the following:

- Computing areas/volumes for road and/or bridge construction
- Calculating mathematical computations such as volume and area from construction drawings
- Interpreting roadway construction plans and drawings
- Reviewing, analyzing, and verifying project information including cost estimates, project construction quantities, utility installations/relocations, and as-built roadway plans
- Producing construction design plans using a computer aided design software - AutoCAD and Civil 3D

Employment Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

May require Technician Training Certification Program (TTCP) certificates within one year of hire to include but not limited to; Nuclear Densometer, Concrete Field and Lab Testing, Aggregate, Soils, Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA), Traffic Control and SWPPP.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in the field in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. May include exposure to: sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises, and confined spaces; falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control or walking long distances. Hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and is subject to call outs for emergencies. Willingness to accept change of geographical assignments. Interaction with the public by phone and in person. Frequent temporary assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays to include weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
