About the Work Unit

The Engineering Technician works in The Colorado Department of Transportation's (CDOT's) Region 3 Traffic and Safety Unit. The Unit is charged with ensuring the safe and functional operation of the State Highway System. The Traffic and Safety Unit ensures this operation with the use of traffic control signals, pavement markings, lighting, signage and other traffic control devices. This is achieved through capital improvement projects, routine maintenance, and immediate response to changing traffic control needs.

Region 3 encompasses 15 counties in western Colorado.

About thePosition

The Engineering Technician works under the guidance and supervision of an Engineer and

assists with the preparation of traffic engineering plans and provides oversight/supervision of assigned maintenance construction projects in a timely and professional manner to ensure compliance with the plans and specifications. This position assists in traffic operations investigations, assists in asset management and assists with various issues brought forth by other CDOT personnel, outside agencies and the public

Major duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Inventories signs for select highways to determine which traffic signs to be replaced,
  • Assists project managers in the preparation of preliminary and final project plans and specifications including calculating quantities and cost estimates and organizing and assembling final "bid packages" containing final plans, specifications, engineer's cost estimate, clearances (right-of-way, environmental, utility), and other federal and state documentation as necessary for traffic sign projects.
  • Creates and edits sign layouts in SignCAD and orders signs thru the CDOT Sign Shop and/or private sign shop.
  • Assists the Engineer with questions/issues that arise during project construction.
  • Uses Excel spreadsheets, Word document processor, GIS/Access databases, CDOT SAP Project Process, and/or AASHTOWare Project.
  • Inventories the region-wide stencils to assist in determining which highways are good candidates for a new stencil project,
  • Responds to internal CDOT, local agency (county, city/town), and citizen concerns regarding traffic signs.
  • Conducts field inspections of proposed traffic sign locations and final installation of signs for local agency special-use permit sign projects and other non-CDOT sign projects (Adopt-A-Highway, LOGO & TODS).
  • Reviews draft highway strip maps for necessary signing changes in the field, compares the proposed changes to MUTCD standards and assists in determining how the changes will fit within existing signing in the field.
  • Prepares information (sketches and other documents as necessary) to convey signing changes to CDOT crews.
  • Verifies that the final highway strip map reflects the sign changes made in the field.
  • Conducts investigations and studies, write reports, obtains field data to assist in determining and recommending solutions.
  • Manages completion of solutions in field by CDOT staff, hired contractors and city or county personnel.
  • Maintains the regional inventory of traffic assets, primarily signs, striping, and stencil pavement markings; generate inventory reports.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Daytime working hours Monday - Friday
  • Required to drive during daytime business hours to project sites, to conduct inspections and investigations, inventory signs and attend meetings.
  • 5% overnight travel to meet with local officials of cities and counties to discuss wayfinding signage, other traffic signage, striping and stencils, and safety issues throughout the region. This is field work that cannot be completed in a single day due to the extensive driving to and from the location.
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED).
  • AND five (5) years of experience assisting licensed professional engineers, two years of which must have been withtransportation related engineering projects or duties.
Substitution:
  • A combination of relevant education and experience equal to at least five years.
  • Education from an accredited college or university with courseworkin Civil Engineering, Civil Engineering Technology, Project Management, Construction Management, ;or a field closely related to the Major Job Duties will substitute for the required experience on a year-for year basis. Conditions of Employment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License Class B with no restriction on air brakes that allows operation within Colorado.
  • If you have a non-Colorado Commercial Driver's License, you must be eligible to drive in Colorado with your CDL at time of hire. If you currently live outside of Colorado and relocate to reside in Colorado, you must transfer your CDL to Colorado within 30 days of relocation.

Preferred Qualifications:

The Exceptional Applicantwill be an Engineering Assistant or Technician with proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
  • Demonstrated success in the duties listed in the "Description of the Job" section;
  • Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
  • Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
  • Knowledge and experience with the engineering design and construction of traffic highway projects;
  • Knowledge and experience with basic traffic engineering principles of safety, design and operations;
  • Knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering project plans;
  • Knowledge and experience with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) as well as federal and state regulations;
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment;
  • Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments;
  • Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner;
  • Ability to work with a variety of stakeholders with sensitivity to their needs, priorities, promises made and commitments;
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship-building skills;
  • Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and multi-tasking ability;
  • Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem-solving ability;
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral;
  • Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy;

  • Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Gmail, Google Applications, SignCAD,GIS/Access databases, SAP, AASHTOWare Project and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
