The boundaries of District Five include the following counties: Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.

Why does the job exist?
This position serves as a lead Lab Tester/inspector for roadway, bridge and maintenance construction projects while providing instruction and direction to other inspectors in the inspection, testing, and documentation of construction projects. This position also provides assistance to the Project Manager and the Engineering Tech Supervisor as needed in the field and in the office.
How does it get done?
Incumbent will assist the Project Manager and Engineering Tech Supervisor with the assignment of duties to inspectors. The incumbent will also perform independent field inspections and conduct field materials sampling and testing for roadways, structures, and miscellaneous items for construction projects to provide a safe, quality, and cost effective transportation system. In addition, the incumbent will also provide instruction, guidance and direction to other inspectors as needed. This position will also document work activities and process project documents as well as verify documentation for completeness to ensure all contractual guidelines and/or special provisions are met.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and four (4) years of relevant experience. Substitutions Apply. See Substitution Table below.

Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results. Pre-employment background investigation is required and is conditional pending results. Business reference check and Driver's License verification are also required and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in the Lab with some field days in varying weather conditions: hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain and snow. Exposure to sunlight, dust, pollen, chemicals, rough/rugged terrain, insects and reptiles, noxious plants and infected trash; exposure to moving mechanical parts, high precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals and/or asphalt and petroleum products; exposure to temperatures up to 150 degrees around oil distributor operations; high speed/high volume traffic and loud noises; subject to falls and bruises, considerable physical strain; standing for extended periods of time doing traffic control; hand dexterity required for some duties; numerous specific vision abilities to include: close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus; some climbing, reaching, kneeling and crawling to perform job duties; ability to lift up to 50 pounds. Work may also be performed in an office setting with exposure to visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and telephone usage to include working with faxes, copiers and printers. May be required to work irregular hours and weekends, holidays, and overtime are required.
