HDR is seeking an Environmental Scientist that is a well-rounded, team-oriented individual with excellent communication skills who can manage multiple activities related to environmental compliance and natural resources. Individuals who have succeeded in this position are self-motivated and possess versatility, a willingness to fully engage in a variety of tasks, effective time management and excellent technical writing skills.

The primary duties of the Environmental Scientist include working on a wide variety of environmental permitting, compliance, and natural resource projects as they relate to power, water resources, roadway, rail, and related projects.

Position is responsible for assisting with environmental permits, documentation, biological assessments, environmental compliance documentation, collection and analysis of data, compliance monitoring and reporting, data management, and research. Position will also be responsible for managing and conducting SWPPP inspections, Phase 1 ESA efforts, and has growth opportunity for project management and staff coordination involvement to meet project requirements and deadlines.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Lead and support field wetland delineations in accordance with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers methodology and other field surveys as needed.
  • Provide lead effort for small to medium size environmental projects.
  • Support NEPA documentation, permitting and compliance efforts for energy, transportation, and water projects in the region.
  • Perform SWPPP inspections and prepare inspection reports.
  • Support Phase 1 ESA efforts for a diversity of project types.
  • Coordinate directly with public and private agencies and clients.
  • Collaborate with project managers, engineers, public involvement specialists, real estate staff, and others as part of a variety of project planning and design efforts throughout the region.
  • Be part of a professional team of biologists, wetland scientists, and NEPA specialists.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with ArcGIS desktop software and applications (e.g., Collector) preferred.
  • Familiar with engineering plan sets.
  • Minimum 5 years of environmental consulting (preferred), resource agency, or similar work experience in Illinois and Missouri.
  • Exceptional and demonstrated technical writing ability. Experience drafting and reviewing technical documents such as scientific papers, survey finding reports, permit applications (e.g. 404/401 permitting), and compliance documentation.
  • Familiar with completing environmental due diligence screening to inform scope/fee and proposal development.
  • Demonstrated field experience - including wetland delineation, habitat assessment, or species surveys.
  • Ability to travel to job sites for inspections and fieldwork. Overnight travel may be required at times.

  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or closely related field
  • 5 years technical and/or field experience preparing environmental documents
  • Proficient with MS Office (Word, Excel)
  • Strong environmental writing and communication skills
  • Strong conceptual, organizational, problem-solving and research abilities
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
