Your Opportunity

We are seeking an exceptionally talented and enthusiastic entry level Environmental Technician with a keen interest in the natural sciences and ecological restoration to join our Wisconsin team out of our Green Bay office. This person is a passionate individual with strong natural resource expertise ready o assist our project teams with wetland delineations, natural resource permitting, wildlife surveys, aquatic surveys and ecosystem restoration projects. The candidate will work closely with project managers and staff scientists with development and delivery of environmental studies for projects involving utility and renewable energy projects and ecological restoration work. This is a full-time (40 hour work week) position. Stantec will be responsible for training and travel expenses. This position will initially include working in Wisconsin and various locations throughout the Midwest, with future opportunities to work with other Stantec staff around the United States.

Your Key Responsibilities
  • Wetland and stream delineation and assessments.
  • Vegetation inventories.
  • Wildlife surveys and habitat assessments.
  • Aquatic assessments (lake and stream).
  • Ecological restoration design and implementation.
  • Background environmental data reviews.
  • Environmental permit applications.
  • Native vegetation and invasive species management.
  • Lead field crews to carry-out tasks related to invasive species identification and control (herbicide spraying and cutting / mowing), native seeding and planting, prescribed burning, and brush / tree removal. Equipment and tool operations to conduct the above tasks may include the use of light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brushsaws, herbicide sprayers, ATVs / UTVs, and tractors / skid loaders with various attachments.
  • Train and mentor ecosystem restoration staff to develop skills while conducting field tasks such as plant identification, invasive species control methods, ecological restoration techniques, and natural area assessments.
  • GPS data collection and mapping support.
  • ArcGIS online mapping and data collection applications.
  • Record, enter, organize, manage, and analyze data.
  • Assist with and prepare portions of written reports, tables, spreadsheets, databases, and maps for client and regulatory agency review.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

Required:
  • An interest in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, natural resource conservation and enhancement, and the outdoors is essential.
  • Ability to operate and conduct routine preventative maintentance on a variety of equipment and tools that includes light and heavy-duty trucks and trailers, chainsaws / brush saws, backpack herbicide sprayers, UTVs / ATVs, and tractors.
  • National Wildfire Coordinating Group Wildland Fire Intro (S-130 / S-190 / L-180).
  • The ability to solve problems using critical thinking and to complete tasks with consideration to their own and the team's safety is important.
  • Valid state Pesticide Applicators licenses, including applicable categories for herbicide application in natural areas and aquatic environments.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including exceptional MS Office skills.
  • Experience at working well in a team atmosphere and independently.
  • Working understanding of policies and procedures for Health, Safety, Security and Environment (HSSE), including client-specific training (as required).
  • Working knowledge of field sampling techniques.
  • Willingness to travel and conduct field work in potentially remote areas for extended periods including overnight travel is expected for this position. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
  • Ability to walk up to 10 miles per day and lift up to 50 lbs.

Preferred:
  • Strong wetland delineation, ecological community restoration and plant and animal identification skills are preferred.

Education and Experience
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in an environmental (botany, biology, ecology, natural resources, wildlife biology, or related field) discipline with demonstrated experience with biological surveys in the region.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience.
  • Must be comfortable with computers and iPad GPS units or other similar GPS based survey equipment.
  • Technical writing skills are essential for this position.
  • Some field experience in natural resource inventories, restoration implementation, invasive species eradication is preferred.
